Mahmoud Khalil, the 30-year-old Columbia University student and pro-Palestinian activist, filed a claim Thursday requesting $20 million in damages from the Trump administration, accusing the federal government of false imprisonment after Khalil was detained for months in Louisiana, the Associated Press reported.

Key Facts

A federal court filing Thursday accuses the Department of Homeland Security, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and the State Department of false imprisonment, and claims Khalil was maliciously prosecuted, according to the Associated Press.

The filing alleges federal government officials, including President Donald Trump, sought to “terrorize [Khalil] and his family” after he was “effectively kidnapped” in March by federal agents, AP reported.

Khalil was released on bail from a Louisiana immigration detention facility on June 20, more than three months after his arrest, after a judge ruled the Trump administration could not lawfully detain or deport him.

Neither the Departments of Homeland Security and State nor ICE immediately responded to requests for comment from Forbes.

This is a developing story.
