Hugh Jackman’s The Sheep Detectives is new in theaters, but for viewers who prefer to watch the family comedy at home, the movie should be available on streaming by early summer.
Directed by Kyle Balda, The Sheep Detectives stars Jackman as George, a shepherd who reads whodunit novels to his sheep at night, not realizing that his woolly companions actually understand the murder mysteries. The stories especially become helpful to the sheep when George is discovered dead one morning, so they employ their detective skills to figure out who is responsible for the shepherd’s death.
Rated PG, The Sheep Detectives also stars Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Tosin Cole, Hong Chau and Emma Thompson. The film also stars the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein and Rhys Darby.
The Sheep Detectives opened in theaters on Friday, earning $3.7 million from 3,457 North American theaters (including Thursday previews). The film is projected by Deadline to earn $13.6 million domestically through Sunday.
Since The Sheep Detectives is an Amazon MGM Studios film, it will likely have a different streaming release pattern than most films.
Generally, but not always, Amazon MGM releases skip the digital streaming route (where films are available to purchase or rent on premium video on demand) and instead make their home entertainment debuts on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming platform.
How Soon Will ‘The Sheep Detectives’ Come To Prime Video?
Generally, it takes about five to six weeks from the time Amazon MGM Studios’ movies open in theaters to the day they arrive on streaming video on demand on Prime Video.
For example, Amazon MGM’s crime thriller The Accountant 2 opened in theaters on April 25, 2025, and arrived on Prime Video 41 days later on Prime Video on June 5, 2025. Julia Roberts’ workplace drama After the Hunt debuted also had a 41-day theatrical to SVOD window, as the film opened in theaters on Oct. 10, 2025, and arrived on Prime Video release on Nov. 20, 2025.
More recently, the Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry action thriller Crime 101, which opened in theaters on Feb. 13, debuted on Prime Video 47 days later, on April 1.
Should The Sheep Detectives follow the same release pattern as The Accountant 2, After the Hunt and Crime 101, then the film should arrive on SVOD on Prime Video sometime between June 18 and June 24.
While Amazon MGM Studios tends to follow a consistent release pattern with its releases on streaming, occasionally, they make exceptions. Thanks to the blockbuster success of Project Hail Mary, Amazon MGM extended the theatrical window and delayed the streaming release of the film.
The Sheep Detectives is new in theaters.
