The Rolling Stones Return To The Top 10 In America With A New Smash

The Rolling Stones are one of the bestselling groups of all time, with tens of millions of albums sold. The band broke out during a time when, if fans wanted to listen to a song or album that they loved, they had to purchase it or hope that it played on the radio, and many of the acts from those decades may never see their totals beaten.

Sales have been decimated throughout the past several decades, first by the spread of file sharing via platforms like Napster and LimeWire, then via streaming sites, but diehard followers continue to purchase music from the acts they adore, including the Rolling Stones. More than half a century after the English rock outfit first began scoring wins on charts on both sides of the Atlantic, the Rolling Stones are back with not just another hit, but one more top 10 smash in America.

The Rolling Stones Return With “In the Stars”

For months, the Rolling Stones teased that a new album was in the works, and only recently did the three remaining members, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, make it official. The band’s upcoming album Foreign Tongues, its twenty-fifth, will arrive on July 10, and lead single “In the Stars” dropped earlier this month.

That track launches on one Billboard ranking in the U.S., the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. The tally focuses on the bestselling tunes in the country that Billboard classifies specifically as rock, though that term is slightly vague. This week, “In the Stars” narrowly manages to become a top 10 success as it kicks off its time in tenth place on the purchase-only roster.

The Rolling Stones Score a Fifteenth Rock Bestseller

As “In the Stars” arrives, the Rolling Stones score a milestone fifteenth placement on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. Just under half of those tunes, seven in total, have reached the top 10.

“In the Stars” is tied with the tune “Scarlet,” which also credits former Led Zeppelin superstar Jimmy Page, by peaking in tenth place. Here are all of the top 10 hits by the Rolling Stones on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart.

  • “Angry”
  • “Brown Sugar”
  • “In the Stars”
  • “Living in a Ghost Town”
  • “Scarlet” with Jimmy Page
  • “She’s a Rainbow”
  • “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” with Lady Gaga

The Rolling Stones Continue Its Winning Streak

The Rolling Stones have been on a winning streak on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart with the group’s most recent albums. In 2023, the band returned with Hackney Diamonds, its first full-length of original material in more than 17 years. That project produced a pair of singles that both peaked in the same position, just a few pegs above where “In the Stars” arrives this time around. Lead cut “Angry” and “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” which also credits Lady Gaga, debuted on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart, and then one frame later climbed to No. 7, which turned out to be their all-time highs.

The Rolling Stones Follow Motionless in White

Only a pair of tunes debut on this week’s Rock Digital Song Sales chart, and they launch back-to-back. Coming in one space ahead of the Rolling Stones is “Playing God” by Motionless in White. That song also credits Corey Taylor, known as the lead vocalist of Slipknot and also for his time in the band Stone Sour.

An additional four tracks return to the 15-space tally this time around. Noah Kahan’s “The Great Divide,” the title track from his latest album, reenters the list at No. 5, while Fleetwood Mac’s classic “Landslide” is back at No. 7. Another pair of cuts come in beneath the latest by the Rolling Stones, with “Time of Your Life (Good Riddance)” by Green Day and “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears landing at Nos. 14 and 15, respectively, after not finding a home on the list several days ago.
