Heading into the 2026 offseason, many thought Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill would be a cap casualty because it would save the team $6 million in salary cap space.
Instead Tranquill renegotiated the final year of his original three-year, $19 million contract, reducing his base pay from $6 million to $3.5 million and trimming his cap number by $2.5 million.
During organized team activities (OTAs), Tranquill explained why he took a pay cut to remain in Kansas City.
“We love it here,” Tranquill said. “You develop relationships in this league and you realize it doesn’t last forever. And so when you do have something special, I think you want to be a part of it, and I certainly love our room. I love our coaches, and I love the guys in there, and this place has become special to me.”
Off the field, his wife, Jackie, just had their fourth child, giving the Tranquills more reason to settle down and not uproot their growing family.
“My family loves it here,” he said.
On the field, the former defensive back at Notre Dame has started at both middle linebacker and outside linebacker for the Chiefs, making him a versatile weapon for Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
“Spags is the chess master,” Tranquill said. “And we’re the pieces on the board.”
It’s an apt analogy for Tranquill who won the Chess.com 2023 BlitzChamps II tournament.
The linebacker known for his smarts started all 17 games for the Chiefs last season, recording 103 tackles, including two sacks.
So losing Tranquill would have been a blow to a Chiefs defense that lost another versatile linebacker in Leo Chenal, who signed a three-year, $24.75 million contract with the Washington Commanders.
The Chiefs originally got Tranquill for a bargain deal (a one-year, $3 million contract) after being recruited out of free agency by head coach Andy Reid during the 2023 offseason.
His pitch included texting the linebacker a picture of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which Tranquill ended up winning in his very first season in Kansas City after he helped the Chiefs defeat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
Tranquill then became the recruiter during the 2026 offseason, enticing safety Alohi Gilman to join him in Kansas City. The safety, who played at Notre Dame and the Los Angeles Chargers with Tranquill, went so far as to call him his third agent.
“He’s been recruiting me hard here,” Gilman said. “I have a lot of respect for him. That’s my guy. I’ll go to war with him any day.”
They were on the same Fighting Irish team from 2017 to 2019. And while both were with the Chargers from 2020 to 2022, Gilman, who grew up in Oahu, taught Tranquill how to surf.
“Lo and I have a special relationship,” Tranquill said.
The former teammates have reunited with a common goal: To reach the Super Bowl, which Tranquill experienced during his first two years with the Chiefs.
The opportunity to win another one in Kansas City was yet another reason why Tranquill came back — even at a reduced rate.
“Definitely want to help this team bring a championship back here,” he said.
