The Toronto Blue Jays have spent much of the 2026 season cycling through bullpen arms as they attempt to reinforce a pitching staff with postseason aspirations. That approach has led to several short-term roster moves involving veteran relievers expected to handle some emergency innings.
Most recently, one of those pitchers was Austin Voth, a veteran right-hander who has repeatedly found himself moving between organizations and roster statuses throughout this year. Despite receiving multiple opportunities in Toronto, though, his latest stay with the club proved remarkably brief.
Following a three-day stint with the team, Voth was designated for assignment last week and has now formally cut ties with the organization by electing free agency, according to the official transaction tracker.
Toronto Blue Jays Lose Veteran Pitcher Again As Roster Shuffle Continues
This was not the first time the team had pushed Voth off the roster this season, as it has sent him back and forth from the minors and signed him to two different contracts this season.
“Voth, 34 this month, has been on Toronto’s roster a couple of times this year as an emergency arm,” Darragh McDonald wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “In both cases, he was quickly bumped off the roster after one appearance. Back in April, he gave them 2 2/3 innings against the White Sox, allowing one earned run.”
But the latest transaction continues a nomadic season for the veteran.
“Voth will hit the open market for the third time in 2026,” CBS Sports noted. “The (Chicago) White Sox first released him coming out of spring training, and Voth has now elected free agency on two occasions after the Blue Jays designated him for assignment. Voth’s latest stint with Toronto lasted just three days, with the Blue Jays dropping him from their 40-man roster after he was lit up for five runs on five hits and four walks over 3.1 innings in a bulk-relief role last Friday in Baltimore.”
Toronto Blue Jays Could Seek Another Reunion With Veteran Pitcher
Despite the recent struggles, Voth brings extensive major league experience.
He has appeared in parts of eight MLB seasons with the Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners and Blue Jays, compiling more than 360 career innings at the major league level.
Voth’s most productive campaign came in part of the 2022 season with Baltimore, when he posted a 3.04 ERA across 83 innings while serving in a versatile bullpen role.
Given the continued demand for experienced pitching depth around baseball, Voth may not remain on the open market for long. For now, however, the veteran right-hander is once again a free agent after another short-lived chapter with the Blue Jays came to an end.
