Organizations across Major League Baseball routinely rely on experienced infield depth throughout a long season.
Even players without much upside move between teams throughout the season as they attempt to address short-term roster needs, as long as those players have some significant big-league experience.
And that process has certainly played out for veteran infielder Sergio Alcantara this season, as it has for much of his career.
Former San Francisco Giants Infielder Leaves MLB After Philadelphia Phillies Organization Cut
After joining the Philadelphia Phillies organization and spending the first two months at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, the four-year big-league infielder found himself facing another career crossroads.
Alcantara joined the Phillies shortly before Opening Day and the team cut ties with him late last month despite a decent showing in Triple-A. Now, Alcantara has left affiliated baseball altogether to continue his career abroad.
“Dominican INF Sergio Alcantara has signed with the Puebla Pericos of the Mexican League,” Francys Romero reported on X, formerly Twitter. “The 29-year-old played 35 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley before joining the LMB club.”
While he did not receive a major league opportunity with Philadelphia, Alcantara brought significant experience to the organization after parts of four seasons in the majors.
The switch-hitting Alcantara has appeared in 157 major league games with the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants. Across those appearances, he compiled a .207 batting average while providing defensive versatility throughout the infield.
His most extensive major league action came in 2021 with the Cubs, when he appeared in 89 games and logged time at shortstop, second base and third base. But Alcantara’s latest big-league stint came with the Giants last year, appearing in just one game.
Though offensive production has often been difficult to find consistently at the highest level, his ability to handle multiple positions helped him remain in demand across several organizations.

Now, the 29-year-old will bring that experience to the Puebla Pericos of the Mexican League. The league has increasingly become a destination for former major leaguers seeking regular playing time and opportunities to continue their careers after exhausting affiliated opportunities.
For Alcantara, the move represents another chapter in a professional career that has already included stops with five major league organizations and more than 150 big league appearances. After his time with the Phillies organization came to an end, he has quickly found a new opportunity to continue playing every day.
