The San Francisco Giants continue navigating a difficult season that has featured significant roster turnover, including the surprising trade of longtime catcher Patrick Bailey earlier this year.
That move briefly created an opportunity for veteran catcher Logan Porter, who joined the organization in 2024, but that chance was very short lived.
Porter’s stint with the Giants’ big-league club this season lasted for just one major-league appearance before he was outrighted. That move pushed him to elect free agency and now he has joined an American League rival.
“Catcher Logan Porter has agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Angels on a minor league deal and will report to Triple-A,” WHDH Boston’s Ari Alexander reported on X, formerly Twitter. “Porter, who recently elected Free Agency after being outrighted, has MLB experience with the (Kansas City) Royals and Giants.”
San Francisco Giants’ Patrick Bailey Replacement Leaves For In-State Rival
The Giants, who are run by legendary catcher Buster Posey, abruptly cut ties with Bailey as they sought a turnaround in the standings during a disappointing season. Initially, that move meant bringing Porter up to the big leagues as his replacement.
“The 30-year-old Porter spent two days on the Giants’ active roster in early May,” Anthony Franco wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “They called him up after trading Patrick Bailey to Cleveland, getting him into one game as a pinch-runner after Christian Koss was hit by a pitch. Porter was quickly optioned back to Triple-A, where he hit .241/.292/.362 in 65 plate appearances this season. He’s a .244/.359/.389 batter over five Triple-A campaigns and has appeared in 17 big league contests over parts of three seasons.”
That brief major-league opportunity might have been Porter’s final appearance in a Giants uniform, though he could return to the organization at some point down the line.

Meanwhile, the Angels have spent much of the season searching for catching depth throughout the organization, making Porter a logical addition given his experience in both Triple-A and the major leagues. And after the Angels cut ties with Austin Wynns in a trade with the Atlanta Braves, Porter could find a big-league opportunity with the team soon.
Porter has appeared in parts of three major-league seasons with the Royals and Giants, compiling seven big-league hits. And it should be noted that he did score a run in that sole pinch running appearance for the Giants this season.
For the Giants, Porter’s departure represents a small but notable roster change during a season that has featured quite a bit of turnover.
