Minhyuk of MONSTA X has released a new solo digital single, “Reaching,” a sweet message about love and exploring those connections.

Written, composed, and arranged by K-indie singer-songwriter and producer Hyun-sang Ha, the pop-rock ballad was created with his friend, Minhyuk, in mind. While Ha was writing the song, he thought about how it would feel to be a fan of someone like Minhyuk, and how fans would hope “those feelings would reach him.” So, he gifted the handsome vocalist the song, saying in a press release, “I hope this song becomes a gift for Minhyuk and for anyone who listens.”

Minhyuk incorporates his soft yet husky vocals into the track, layering them with electric guitar riffs, steady drum beats, and acoustic melodies. The lyrics are heartfelt and romantic, and paired with Minhyuk’s vocals, evoke a sense of yearning, sincerity, and comfort.

The words “I love you” alone / Aren’t enough to express it / So I want to gather / The sky in my palms / And send it to you

It’s a song about longing, wanting to reach out to them, and declaring that love. It makes one wonder why this song isn’t on any K-drama soundtrack yet. It’s the perfect song for a sweet, romantic comedy.

The accompanying music video for the single is very “boyfriend-coded,” showcasing Minhyuk spending time in the countryside with his guitar, wearing a simple white button-up shirt and jeans. Set against a tranquil forest backdrop, Minhyuk is enjoying nature, with the focus on him, and conveys what it would be like to be serenaded by him. Again, it’s very “boyfriend-coded” and feels like a sweet memory. It’s very opposite from his previous solo track, “Ongshimi” (featuring his MONSTA X bandmate, Joohoney), an EDM trap song about gamja-ongsimi, the traditional Korean potato dumpling soup.

“Reaching” shows a softer, more emotional side of the very energetic (and sarcastic) MONSTA X member. It’s quite surprising to hear something gentle in nature from the singer (if you follow the group closely), but it’s not shocking, as he has the skills and ability to elevate the track.

After listening to “Reaching” and watching the video, it’s no surprise that Ha wrote the song in the eyes of Minhyuk’s fans. It’s a perfect reflection of how they feel about him.

Minhyuk of MONSTA X’s new track “Reaching” is available on all streaming platforms.
