When it was first announced that EVAN, formerly known as HEESEUNG, was leaving the K-pop group ENHYPEN, many were curious about what his sound would be – or exactly who EVAN is. There were hints throughout the 24-year-old’s music career that showed his knack for rock. From his alternative rock fashion in “Brought The Heat Back” to his rock star performances, it’s no wonder his debut showcases an edgy, rockstar vibe with “RIDE OR DIE.”

With his debut single, he releases two songs – the alternative rock song “RIDE OR DIE” and the soft indie lo-fi pop track, “Overflow.” As EVAN, he shows his artistry on his own terms, taking complete control of the creative process – songwriting, composition, production, and the overall visual direction of his work. This was his chance to show another side of his creative perspective and emotional depth, and he succeeds, as both songs tell a deep story.

With “RIDE OR DIE,” which references the popular phrase meaning loyalty, the press release states, the song “captures the overwhelming emotions and longing that come with yearning for someone’s love.” It could also reference the fans who have been EVAN’s “Ride or Die,” especially with the recent, unexpected changes.

The accompanying music video shows EVAN with a group of friends before he becomes completely invisible and is ignored, even as he sings loudly. Even alone, he is dancing on top of a weathered car that never leaves his side, reassuring his car – and the listeners, “It’s gonna be alright.”

“Overflow,” which refers to water brimming at the edge of a glass, represents feeling overwhelmed with emotions. EVAN tells Weverse that it’s more about him personally: “Everyone feels sad sometimes, but there aren’t many ways to let that out. Even when I do open up to someone, sometimes I think, ‘What if all this is just bits of conversation that’ll just disappear right up in smoke for them?’”

EVAN says in the press release for the single, “Above all, I feel grateful. I want to continue working hard and think deeply about what kind of music and messages can move people and resonate with fans. I hope listeners can get a glimpse of the kind of artist I want to be. Since this single reflects the many thoughts and emotions I carry within me, I believe the feelings captured in these songs are closest to the kind of music I hope to continue sharing in the future.”

EVAN’s ‘RIDE OR DIE’ is available on the following streaming platforms – Apple Music and Spotify.
