FIFA will let Seattle host its planned “Pride Match” on Friday, celebrating the city’s LGBTQ Pride Week that coincides with the 2026 World Cup—even though both participants Egypt and Iran impose harsh legal penalties for homosexuality in their countries.

In a statement sent to multiple outlets, FIFA said the World Cup is an “inclusive event that welcomes people from all backgrounds,” adding it would permit the display of “general statements of human rights, including rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity.”
Both the Egyptians and Iranians have protested the match, with the Egyptian National Football Team issuing a statement in December “categorically rejecting any activities related to supporting homosexuality during the match.”
In a separate statement sent to The Athletic, the Iranian team said “no ceremonies, or promotional activities associated with this movement should be present inside the stadium or as part of the match environment,” and that FIFA should “take into account” their “views and concerns.”
FIFA president Gianni Infantino previously denied the “Pride Match” would take place, insisting to a Swiss magazine in January that “on the same day, events organised by external organizations will be taking place in the city. But that has nothing to do with the match itself.”
Homosexual Acts Criminalized In Both Countries
Iran and Egypt are both Muslim-majority countries that criminalize homosexualtiy. Same-sex activity between both men and women is illegal in Iran, and is punishable by 100 lashes for each partner, according to a report from watchdog group Human Dignity Trust. Iran also approves the death penalty for some people convicted. Egypt criminalizes “‘indecency’, ‘scandalous acts’, and ‘debauchery,’” according to the organization, which is enforced to penalize the LGBTQ population. Those convicted can face jail sentences and fines.

Friday’s match will be critical for both teams as they seek to advance to the next round of the tournament. Egypt wins Group G if it beats Iran, while Iran would almost certainly advance to the round of 32 with a win and be eliminated if it loses. Egypt is slightly favored, with Kalshi showing 40% odds of a win chance to win, a 36% chance of a draw and a 25% chance of an Iranian victory.
