One of the rare players to enjoy recent stints with two of baseball’s biggest rivals, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, has now been released by his latest team even as he enjoyed a strong showing at the plate.
Though the long-time infielder might have a hard time settling on his next opportunity, there’s reason to believe he will soon find himself back with another affiliated club soon.
Veteran utilityman Pablo Reyes has built a reputation for finding opportunities wherever they arise, spending time with several organizations across a seven-year major league career.
This season, Reyes received another chance to work his way back to the majors after signing with the San Diego Padres. But that comeback bid has now come to an abrupt end following an injury setback that ultimately cost him his roster spot, according to his official transaction log.
Former New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox Infielder Cut From San Diego Padres After Injury
The Padres added Reyes on a minor league contract with hopes that his defensive versatility and major league experience could provide valuable organizational depth.
“Reyes, 32, has appeared in seven big league seasons,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Darragh McDonald reported at the time. “One year ago, he signed a minor league deal with the Yankees and eventually cracked the Opening Day roster with that club. He was on the roster for almost three months but didn’t play much. He got into 25 games, mostly as a defensive replacement.”
Reyes’ stint with the Yankees was his most recent big-league action, but he also played for the Red Sox in parts of two different seasons, racking up more than 80 games for the Yankees’ historic rival.
That experience followed previous stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics, making Reyes one of baseball’s more well-traveled utility players.
Pablo Reyes’ Injury Setback Ends Latest Comeback Bid
Unfortunately for Reyes, he suffered an injury during what appeared to be a strong stint with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate this season.
Reyes slashed .310/.408/.491 in 56 games, but missed several games in late June, with his transaction log indicating that he was on the injured list. That might have motivated the Padres to release him, or he might be searching for a new opportunity to crack the big leagues, given his strong showing at the plate for most of this season.
Either way, Reyes didn’t spend long with San Diego’s organization, and the release closes another chapter in a long and persistent career.
Now 32 years old, Reyes again faces uncertainty as he looks for his next opportunity in professional baseball. Given his defensive versatility and history of earning roster spots with multiple organizations, another minor league deal elsewhere wouldn’t be surprising.
