The dramas The Pitt, Pluribus, The Diplomat and Paradise, as well as the comedies Hacks, Widow’s Bay, Abbott Elementary and Shrinking, are among the frontrunners in the nominations for the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be announced Wednesday morning in Los Angeles.
The major nominations for the Primetime Emmys, now in its 78th year, will be announced by Emmy winners Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear) and Jeff Hiller (Somebody Somewhere) along with Television Academy chair Cris Abrego at 11:30 a.m. ET/8:30 a.m. PT on the Television Academy’s YouTube channel (embedded below).
Nominations were announced early Wednesday morning on NBC’s TODAY show in two categories — Outstanding Variety Series and Outstanding Reality Competition — which are listed below.
The Television Academy announced on Tuesday that Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay will host the 2026 ceremony, which is scheduled to air live beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC and stream on Peacock on Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The guest actor and actress Emmys and awards in the technical categories will be handed out in an untelevised Creative Arts Emmys ceremony, which is set for Sept. 5 and 6.
Hargitay, who has been nominated for eight Emmys for Law & Order SVU and won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series statuette in 2006, is one of the frontrunners in the Documentary or Nonfiction Program category for directing My Mom Jayne, which chronicles the life and tragic loss of the actress’ mother, Hollywood star Jayne Mansfield.
While there are bound to be snubs and surprises among the nominations for the 2026 Emmy Awards, fans are bound to be disappointed to learn going into Wednesday morning’s ceremony that the HBO Max hockey romance Heated Rivalry — starring Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams — will not be eligible for any Emmy.
The Television Academy’s rules state that shows financed outside of the U.S. are not eligible for Primetime Emmys, and Heated Rivalry was financed by the Canadian production company Bell Media and streamed on the country’s platform Crave before finding success on HBO Max in the U.S.
Listed below are the nominations in the major categories for the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards.
