Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla said Thursday her Instagram profile was hacked, days after she made a series of racist remarks against Kylian Mbappé following France’s win over Paraguay in a knockout round of the World Cup.

Key Facts

Amarilla said in an X post her Instagram account was hacked “possibly since this morning,” adding, “I am not responsible for anything that is posted there from today onward.”

Amarilla’s Instagram account showed no outward signs of being hacked with the exception of a WhatsApp invite link in her bio that was invalid as of Thursday afternoon.

The purported hack comes days after Amarilla made a series of posts calling Mbappé a “brute,” a “colonised Cameroonian” and said as a child, he “sucked on coconuts, and the most educated creatures he ever listened to were chimpanzees.”

Amarilla’s comments followed the highly physical France-Paraguay game in which Mbappé taunted his opponents and refused to shake hands with Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

Mbappé called out the senator for her comments, labeling her a “despicable woman,” and saying because of her remarks “the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup.”

Amarilla deleted her original post by Tuesday and said she regretted insulting Mbappé, though the senator insisted the star French player apologize to her and threatened to sue him for alleged “gender-based violence” and “political violence.”

Crucial Quote

“Madame Celeste Amarilla, You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position,” Mbappe said in his statement. “You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honor throughout the competition. Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country. I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.”

Amarilla Doubles Down

While the senator has expressed regret over her racist comments, she has continued insulting Mbappé. During a Paraguayan Senate meeting Wednesday, Amarilla called Mbappé a “son of a b—-” for refusing to shake Gill’s hand. “He’s not French, a Frenchman wouldn’t do that,” she added.

Forbes Valuation

Mbappé ranks No. 12 on Forbes’ 2026 list of the world’s highest-paid athletes. Forbes estimates Mbappé raked in $95 million last year, consisting of $70 million in on-field earnings. The French star is arguably the best soccer player in the world as he looks to secure his second World Cup trophy at just 27 years old.

Key Background

Paraguay’s government said Monday that Amarilla’s comments were “contrary to the values and principles that inspire peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity that our country promotes.” Amid Wednesday’s Paraguayan Senate meeting, Senate leader Basilio Nunez said Amarilla’s remarks “aren’t just bad, they’re terrible and they don’t represent what most Paraguayans think.” French prosecutors opened an investigation into Amarilla’s comments and alleged racist abuse after the French Football Federation lodged a complaint. The prosecutors cited an offense with a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a roughly $51,000 fine, Politico reported.
