The start of the 2026 NFL regular season is almost here. It is time to align your bankroll with the season. There are many avenues you can go (and who is to say you can’t do them all) with your sports gambling: regular-season fantasy leagues, best-ball tournaments, ‘traditional’ sportsbook wagers, predictive markets, and, yes, DFS (daily fantasy sports) betting.
This particular article is a primer for those who are going to dive into the DFS market. That means you can play DraftKings, FanDuel, Yahoo, or countless other DFS options that will emerge throughout the season.
This is a refresher, if you will. It is always good to remember the basics before you jump into it. So let’s go.
Bankroll Management
The most important thing is to know (and to keep it consistent) how much you can comfortably lose. It’s not preparing yourself for loss, but it is establishing a floor for your money management.
After you have determined that, there are two rules of thumb. The first is the 80/10/10 principle, where 80% is spent on cash games, 10% is spent on tournaments with high upside, and the remaining 10% is spent on a slate of your choice.
The second rule is that you stake only 3-5% of your money on cash games and no more than 0.5-2% on tournaments.
Depending on your bankroll, it could come out the same, but have a plan.
The NFL season lasts 18 weeks, not counting playoffs and the Super Bowl. Think about how much you want to spend each week, and follow through.
Cash v Tournament Play (GPP)
On almost every platform, you will have the option to play cash games or tournaments. And while everyone wants to win the milimaker (and who is to say you won’t?), we have to go about this realistically.
So let’s talk about the games.

Cash Games
In cash formats, your goal is to finish in the top 40-50%. These games are 50/50s, double-ups, and head-to-head, just to mention the most popular ones.
50/50s
In these contests, the top 50% of people in the contest double their entry fee.
Know the rake (what the platform takes as a small fee. To get a profit, aim to finish in the top 45-48% consistently)
- The strategy is to build a safe, high-floor lineup
- Select the players who will see consistent volume
- Heavily targeted wide receivers
- Preferably the running back who will see more than 51% of the carries
- Don’t worry about the chalk…chalk is good in 50/50s
- Always look for the median average score…remember you are not swinging for the fences, you are just trying to beat half of the entrants
- With that in mind, if you are testing DFS, go for the large 50/50 contest. There are less likely to be sharks, and you will have a better chance at the median score.
Head-to-Head (H2H)
This is your lineup against one other person’s lineup. The person who emerges with the highest score wins the total of the entry fees, minus the rake.
- Best practice is to find your opponent (or play against a friend). Find out as much information about your opponent as you can (like their track record of wins and losses on the site). You want to avoid playing against the sharks.
Double Ups
In double-ups, approximately the top half of the field will double their entry fee.
- You want a steady baseline. Focus on the floor.
- Prioritize high-targeted wide receivers.
- Prioritize players (running backs, receivers, tight ends) who see consistent targets.
- “Bell-cow” running backs are your friends.
- Chalk is good. Play the reliable player regardless of how chalky he is. Get in as many as possible; you are attempting to be in the top half of this tournament.
And that being said, target large field contests (50+). While you may be feeling ‘sharky,’ remember the smaller the field, the more likely it is inhabited by the sharks. This also goes for single-entry tournaments (a lesson I learned much too late last season)!
GPP/Tournament Play
This is where the sexiness begins. The lure of walking away with millions is quite alluring, and someone has to win, right? But just keep in mind that the payout structure on GPPs is top-heavy. You will need a unique, contrarian high-scoring lineup to walk away with the bag.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Your chances of winning increase with the more lineups you put in (duh), so you generally want to enter the maximum number of lineups that particular tournament allows.
There are at least four points that you need to remember when competing in GPP tournaments (besides the research…which strictly speaking is the most important—but I got you).
CORRELATION

Correlation is when you put players that will positively affect your scoring together on the same slate.
- The most advantageous correlation is stacking a quarterback with one OR two of his receivers.
- In a game with high scoring potential, you want to add a receiver from the other side.
- There is also the running back stacked with his defense when you feel the game will be lopsided with one team dominating another.
- There are many ways you can use correlation. Some of the ways will depend on the scoring system of the platform you are using.
- In GPPs, don’t be afraid to get weird with your correlation, as long as it makes sense to your research.
LEVERAGE
And the reason you aren’t afraid of getting weird in GPP tournaments is that you want leverage over the other contestants.
Your leverage can be as simple as fading the popular chalk for a player that you feel will create roughly the same amount of points as the ‘chalk’ player but is being undervalued.
Remember, in GPP, statistically based weird is what we are going for!!!!
OWNERSHIP
And ownership percentage of players is how you gauge just how close to the field your lineup is.
The goal is to make your lineup unique, so try (in GPP) to stay away from having all the players that the field values (this is the strategy for cash).
FIELD SIZE
After all that is said, generally speaking, when the field is 1000 or less, you can play more chalk. But you always want to be striving for unique lineups that are going to score high.
DFS
Remember there are multiple platforms you can play daily fantasy. But just as there are multiple platforms, there are multiple ways that each platform scores; know the scoring rules in the basic and most important thing to remember in both daily fantasy and your weekly fantasy.
When we get into the season, these weekly shares will be mostly about DraftKings with a bit of FanDuel sprinkled in for a change of pace.
