‘Scary Movie’ Arrives On Streaming This Week

Scary Movie, the sixth film in the horror comedy franchise created by the Wayans Bros. in 2000, is new on digital streaming this week after a lucrative run in theaters.

Rated R, Scary Movie opened in theaters nationwide on June 5. The reboot stars Damon Wayans Jr., Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris and Regina Hall, and is directed by Michael Tiddes. Like the previous movies in the franchise, the new Scary Movie spoofs hit horror movies of the day. This time around, the franchise takes jabs at M3GAN, Terrifier, Get Out, Weapons, Sinners, Longlegs and of course, the Scream franchise and its Ghostface killer, among other horror hits.

Scary Movie earned a franchise-best opening weekend with $54.4 million in ticket sales from 3,490 North American theaters from June 5-7. Winding down its theatrical run, Scary Movie earned $255,000 from 225 theaters over the weekend to bring its domestic total to $107.9 million.

Combined with the film’s international ticket sales of $120.7 million, Scary Movie has earned $228.6 million at the worldwide box office to date. Per Variety, Scary Movie had a production budget of $30 million before marketing costs.

‘Scary Movie’ Arrives On Digital Streaming On Tuesday

Scary Movie will be released on Tuesday, July 21, on digital streaming via premium video on demand, a new listing on Prime Video confirms. In addition to Prime Video, Scary Movie will be available to purchase on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies & TV for $24.99.

Since new digital rentals are typically $5 less than purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent Scary Movie for $19.99 for a 48-hour period.

Scary Movie’s global haul of $228.6 million makes it the second-highest grossing film in the history of the franchise. The original Scary Movie, released in 2000, is first after $277.2 million worldwide before inflation. Scary Movie 4, released in 2006 is the third-highest grossing film in the franchise, globally, after earning $178.7 million, followed by 2003’s Scary Movie 3 with $155.2 million and Scary Movie 2 with $141.1 million.

Interest in the films waned in 2013, when Scary Movie 5 earned a franchise-low $78.6 million worldwide.

Scary Movie arrives on PVOD on Tuesday.
