The northern lights could be visible from some northern states on Sunday night, according to a forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, although forecasters are not predicting any space weather activity that would typically produce bigger light shows.

Key Facts

NOAA is predicting a Kp index of four out of nine for Sunday night, meaning the aurora could move farther from Earth’s magnetic poles, while appearing “brighter” with more “motion and formations.”

Forecasters are not expecting any space weather to impact the aurora on Sunday night, although the Kp index could still reach above four later this evening into Monday morning, according to NOAA’s three day forecast.

Where Could the Aurora Be Visible?

Northern regions of Washington, Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula have a chance of catching the lights, along with much of North Dakota and northern parts of South Dakota. Most of Alaska’s interior has a much higher chance of seeing the lights, per usual. However, the sun sets in Alaska much later during the summer months, meaning viewers have a much more limited timeframe to catch the lights. The sun will set in Anchorage around 10:35 p.m. on Sunday night.

What’s the Best Way to View the Aurora?

Prospective viewers should travel as close to the Earth’s magnetic north pole as possible. Viewers should find a vantage point with a clear view of the sky facing north, ideally away from other sources of light like cities. They should also time their trips for the hours the aurora is most active—typically between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

What’s the Best Way to Photograph the Aurora?

Smartphones are capable of taking quality photos of the northern lights, experts who spoke to National Geographic said. Aurora photographers should remember to turn off flash, switch their devices into night mode and shoot in RAW image format. They should also make use of a tripod and a timer, as cameras need to remain still for longer periods of time in order to capture quality images.
