John Mayer has never been known as a country artist, though he has flirted with the genre in the past. He started his career in pure acoustic singer-songwriter pop, then ventured more into rock and Americana. After finding fame and becoming a musician’s musician, he has worked with artists in a number of different styles, seemingly doing whatever interests him.
Mayer scored one of his biggest hits in years earlier in 2026 by teaming up with country superstar Lainey Wilson. The two produced “Phone, Keys, Wallet,” which appears to be the first single from an upcoming album by Wilson. The track rises on several Billboard charts and debuts on another, helping Mayer score his first win in years on a hugely competitive tally.
John Mayer Returns to the Radio Songs Chart
“Phone, Keys, Wallet” launches at No. 44 on the Radio Songs chart this week. The ranking measures the tunes that rack up the largest total number of audience impressions across radio stations throughout the United States, with no restriction on genre. The collaboration becomes Mayer’s eighth career appearance on the roster and Wilson’s eleventh.
John Mayer Ends a 16-Year Absence
It has been a long time since Mayer scored a general radio hit in the U.S. His most recent appearance before this week was “Half of My Heart,” which debuted on the Radio Songs chart in June 2010. Three months later, it climbed to its No. 31 peak. Earlier that same year, “Heartbreak Warfare” arrived on the tally, but missed out on the top 40 by only two spots.
Mayer first reached the Radio Songs chart all the way back in the summer of 2002 with his breakout single “No Such Thing.” Later that year, “Your Body Is a Wonderland” followed, doubling his sum. Those tracks remain his first- and second-highest-charting hits on the roster, as they peaked at Nos. 12 and 20, respectively. “Daughters” came along two years later and matched the No. 20 high managed by “Your Body Is a Wonderland.”
John Mayer Matches His Lowest Peak
While a new hit is certainly welcome for Mayer, “Phone, Keys, Wallet” currently matches the Grammy winner’s lowest-peaking tune on the Radio Songs chart. “Say” spent 15 weeks on the list but never climbed higher than No. 44. “Phone, Keys, Wallet” opens in exactly the same position, though it is only beginning its run and could still rise in the coming weeks.
The collaboration also becomes Wilson’s lowest-charting Radio Songs hit so far. Previously, “Hang Tight Honey” represented her lowest peak, as it worked its way to No. 35 two summers ago. “Phone, Keys, Wallet” is now her first track to miss the top 40 on the ranking, at least for the moment.
John Mayer Reaches a New Country Airplay High
“Phone, Keys, Wallet” appears on four Billboard charts this week and rises to a new peak on only one of them. The single steps up two spots to No. 18 on the Country Airplay ranking.
The duet has long stood out as Mayer’s highest-charting hit on that roster, and it is only the second tune of his career to appear on the list. “In the Blood” spent just two frames on the roster nearly a decade ago, in May 2017, and never climbed higher than No. 57.
The addition of Wilson clearly helped turn “Phone, Keys, Wallet” into a country radio hit, as Mayer never managed a top 40 solo. For her, the collaboration sits somewhere in the middle of a much more extensive run on the ranking, where she has accumulated nine top 10 hits and five champions.
John Mayer and Lainey Wilson Rise on Two More Charts
“Phone, Keys, Wallet” also improves on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs chart this week. On both tallies, the collaboration returns to a previously-established peak. The single climbs one rung to No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 and jumps from No. 18 to No. 14 on the Hot Country Songs ranking.
