A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

We have just wrapped the third season of House of the Dragon, which most would agree was better than the last. It will likely be at least two years until the final, fourth season, but we are going to return to the world of Game of Thrones in the interim. That would be for season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a series that fans deem delightful and even George R.R. Martin is over the moon about. Now, we have a release date update.
We’ve just gotten word that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has finished filming season 2. So, that means:
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 wrapped filming in September 2024.
- Season 1 was released on January 18, 2026, 16 months later.
- So, if filming just wrapped on season 2, 16 months from now would be December 2027.
Hm, well that’s not ideal. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was pitched as an “annual release schedule” program, HBO trying to do The Pitt in a bunch of different ways now. So that always meant the series would air in 2027, but that date is…the very end of 2027. Even if that’s an overestimate, it looks like it would be 1.5 years between seasons at the very least. It is hard to imagine post-production being cut from 16 months to 5 months, which would put the seasons a year apart. The latest report is that it will air in the “first half” of 2027, so hopefully that indicates a change.
It’s a bit of an odd situation, as this is a six-episode show that barely runs three hours in total, and is in no way the sprawling production of Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon with tens of thousands of soldiers in battle as dragons fly overhead.
I hope this filming end date does not come with the enormous post-production timespan we previously saw. It does stand to reason that it could be cut down from here as the series has gotten its footing, but it does not seem like this is going to be “annualized” in the traditional sense, seasons airing a year apart. Going back in time, it is genuinely shocking to see that we got 10 hour-long episodes of Game of Thrones every April for six seasons. I still cannot process what’s happened in Hollywood that has changed things so dramatically, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a good example.
