One of the best prospects in all of baseball is being called up to the majors, making him an appealing waiver wire option heading into Week 23. There are also a couple of closers who can help fantasy managers, as well as two hitters who are on hot streaks at the plate. Here are five players to consider adding who are still available in the majority of Yahoo leagues.
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Targets For Week 23
George Lombard Jr., 2B/3B/SS (45% rostered)
We highlighted Lombard in this article two weeks ago. At the time, he was rostered in 42% of Yahoo leagues. Despite the excellent beginning to his career in the majors, he is still available in more than half of leagues. Through 14 games, he is hitting .292 with two home runs and a .352 OBP. He is locked into the starting shortstop job, and is also eligible at second and third base on Yahoo. He shouldn’t be available in this many leagues.
Alejandro Kirk, C, Toronto Blue Jays (45% rostered)
During the dog days of August, catchers can wear down at the plate. Between hot weather and the grind of a long season, this is around the time of year when some of them see a dip in production. Kirk has been limited to 53 games because of injury, so he’s relatively fresh at this point. It’ s showing at the plate, with him hitting 31-for-83 (.373) with a 1.016 OPS over his last 23 games. If you’re struggling at catcher, there may be no better option to add.
Kade Anderson, SP, Seattle Mariners (39% rostered)
The Mariners selected Anderson in the first round of the 2025 Draft. He dominated at Double-A this year, posting a 1.06 ERA and a 0.64 WHIP over 18 starts. He has been almost unhittable, posting 135 strikeouts and allowing just 47 hits across 93 1/3 innings. Just as impressive is that he has issued only 10 walks. The Mariners will have him skip Triple-A and make his first start in the majors Saturday against the Cubs. With his strikeout upside, he should be considered as a priority add in all formats.
Kodai Senga, RP, New York Mets (27% rostered)
The Mets traded Luke Weaver at the deadline, then lost Devin Williams to a shoulder strain. With him out, Senga has stepped into the closer’s role. It might have been the change that Senga needed to get his career back on track. While he has a 7.82 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP for the season, he has logged a save in each of his last four appearances. Three of those were scoreless outings. It’s uncertain when Williams will return, so at least for now, Senga can provide fantasy managers with a boost in saves.
Ben Joyce, RP, Los Angeles Angels (21% rostered)
Joyce was in this column last week. At that time, he was rostered in only 7% of leagues. Since then, he has posted back-to-back outings with a save as he establishes himself as the preferred ninth inning option for the Angels. In six total appearances since coming off the injured list, he has a 0.33 WHIP and has provided eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings. The Angels aren’t exactly racking up wins, but when they do have a save opportunity, Joyce should continue to be the player that they call upon to lock the game down.
Takeaway
Anderson’s arrival to the majors makes him someone to target on the waiver wire in all fantasy baseball formats. Senga and Joyce are two players to consider adding if your team needs saves heading into Week 23, while Lombard and Kirk can provide value with their bats.
