Dollar General chief Todd Vasos said in a second-quarter earnings call to laude the company’s $1 price point, sharing plans to dramatically expand it into the holiday season in a competitive push against Dollar Tree and Walmart.

Key Facts

Vasos told analysts that Value Valley, which accounts for Dollar General’s rotating assortment of $1 items, recorded over 16% growth in comparable sales in the second quarter, outpacing the chain’s overall 3.5% same-store sales gain.

Dollar General plans to increase its dollar-priced listings by 40% more than what it had a year ago, with $1 off-shelf displays in more than 9,000 stores on track to reach all locations this year.

When asked whether expanding the $1 items changed customer value perception scores, Vasos said Dollar General’s data shows customers are “relying more and more on that $1 price point” and giving Dollar General credit for a “halo effect on price” across the broader store.

Vasos even noted higher-income shoppers (those earning above $100,000 per year) are buying more $1 items alongside everyday goods.

What To Watch For

Dollar General plans to pilot a subscription and loyalty program by the end of the year and launch a full rollout in 2027, with management expecting such initiatives to “not just support the growth in digital, but also help support the growth in our media network going forward.”

Big Number

Over 1 million. That is how many customers first discovered Dollar General through its delivery platforms and later became in-store shoppers, a figure management cited as evidence that digital and physical channels are reinforcing each other. The company offers same day delivery through myDG Delivery, which can be used through Dollar General’s website or app.

Tangent

Dollar General shares were up 3.3% as of:45 p.m. EDT, reaching around the $127 mark, after soaring more than 13% in premarket trading. The company’s stock is down more than 4.5% on the year.

Key Background

Dollar General’s curated and rotating set of $1 items, known as Value Valley, has become a centerpiece of the company’s value messaging as consumers face elevated food and fuel prices. The rising cost of living has translated into strong sales for Dollar General and its rival Dollar Tree, with the former retailer reporting a 5.2% rise in net sales to $11.29 billion, topping expectations. Same-store sales rose 3.5% alongside a 1.5% jump in average transaction amount, according to its second quarter earnings. Dollar General also benefited from tariff refunds during the quarter and plans to reinvest a portion of the refunds into everyday price reductions. The refunds have supercharged earnings for multiple top retailers including Walmart, Target, Ross and Abercrombie & Fitch.
