At least four people were killed in Manhattan on Monday evening, including a New York City police officer, after a gunman carrying an AR-15-style rifle opened fire inside a skyscraper before taking his own life.

Key Facts

In a press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams identified the slain police officer as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, who had been working with the New York City Police Department for three and a half years.

One person who was wounded during the shooting remained in critical condition, Adams said.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the gunman as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas and said he had a “documented mental health history.”

Tisch said the gunman took his own life by shooting himself in the chest and added that his motives are still under investigation.

The shooting took place at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan that houses several high-profile tenants, including the investment firm Blackstone Group, the accounting firm KPMG and the NFL headquarters.

Crucial Quote

Adams paid tribute to the officer who was killed in the shooting, saying: “He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers. He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore.”
