Some musical acts leave their mark with one or two compositions after releasing perhaps dozens of albums. Other artists manage to make history and change the sound of popular music forever with just one lucky project, or perhaps only a handful. Nirvana fits into the latter category, as the grunge favorites delivered just three full-lengths while the members were together before the passing of lead singer Kurt Cobain.
Debut album Bleach helped Nirvana develop a fan base, but it wasn’t until the group’s sophomore set Nevermind that the trio broke out and rose to the top of charts all around the world. After that, just one more full-length, In Utero, dropped before the Grammy-winning troupe split for good.
It is impressive to see multiple collections by Nirvana live on some of the most competitive charts around the world for long stretches of time, considering how few releases the band was able to share. The biggest compilation from the rock outfit remains a favorite in the United Kingdom, and as it finds space on the most competitive albums chart once more, the set brings Nirvana to a very special landmark number.
Nirvana’s Nirvana Compilation Reaches 200 Weeks
As of this period, Nirvana, the band’s self-titled greatest hits compilation, has lived on the U.K.’s Official Albums chart for 200 frames. The tally ranks the most consumed full-lengths and EPs in the country, utilizing both sales and streaming data in its methodology. Nirvana manages to climb from No. 95 to No. 89 as it celebrates.
Nevermind Remains the Band’s Longest-Charting Album
Nirvana is the second release by the group of the same name to make it to 200 weeks on the Official Albums chart. Nevermind, which is regarded as not only the band’s most successful offering, but a masterpiece, is in a distant first place when looking at the act’s discography. Nevermind has racked up 451 weeks rising and falling on the 100-space roster, though it does not appear on the tally at the moment.
In Utero and MTV Unplugged in New York Also Held on For a Year
Two other releases by Nirvana have managed at least a year on the Official Albums chart, including one that barely made it to that milestone. In Utero, the final LP of original material by the group before it disbanded, spent 62 weeks somewhere on the rundown. MTV Unplugged in New York hit exactly one year.
Nirvana’s Nirvana Is Counted Among the Band’s Top 10s
Nirvana is counted among the five top 10s that the rockers have thus far scored on the Official Albums chart. The set peaked at No. 3, outperforming even Nevermind – though that release brought Nirvana to the tally for the first time in 1991. Both In Utero and MTV Unplugged in New York dominated, while From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah stalled at No. 4.
Nirvana’s Nirvana Remains a Streaming Favorite
This week, Nirvana can be located on two tallies in the U.K. As it reaches 200 periods on the main list of the most popular full-lengths and EPs, the compilation also occupies a spot at No. 80 on the Official Albums Streaming chart. In just one more moment, Nirvana will reach 260 weeks, or exactly half a decade, as one of the most popular titles on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music in the U.K.
Nevermind and MTV Unplugged in New York Also Chart
Nirvana sees three of its full-lengths live on at least one list across the Atlantic. In addition to its self-titled compilation, Nevermind descends on the Official Albums Sales, Official Physical Albums, Official Vinyl Albums and Official Rock and Metal Albums charts. MTV Unplugged in New York also dips and occupies a spot only on the genre-specific roster.
