The grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga has long been one of the most prestigious races on the Summer calendar and has served as a launching pad to the Breeders’ Cup Classic. First run in 1928, this navigation of the New York dirt has seen many legends enter the starting gates. The most notable may have been Secretariat and he was upset that day by a horse named Onion. The 2026 edition features an extremely competitive field that boasts career earnings of $32.8 million. Of the eight entrants, seven have won over $1 million with six garnering $2 million plus on the track. All of the runners are legitimate candidates for the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic in the fall at Keeneland and the winner will receive an automatic entry into the $7 million race on October 31. Let’s take a look at the runner’s competing for $1 million in purse money and provide thoughts on each. The horses will be listed by post position with trainer, jockey, and morning line. Carded as race 12 on August 8 with an expected post time of 6:33 pm eastern, the Whitney promises to be a great betting race.

1 Magnitude

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Jockey: Jose Ortiz

Odds: 9-5

Winner of four in a row including the Dubai World Cup two starts back and the Stephen Foster last out. Recent works indicate he is sitting on another big effort. Combine that with having perhaps the top rider in the game right now and it makes him the logical morning line favorite. The one to beat for sure.

2 Nitrogen

Trainer: Mark Casse

Jockey: John Velazquez

Odds: 4-1

Super accomplished runner that looks to become the 7th female to win this race and first since 1988 (Personal Ensign). Her 12 Âľ length win in the Ogden Phipps against the girls on June 5 provides the confidence for her conditioner. Extremely tough spot but she has never finished out of the top three in 16 lifetime starts. She has the goods to get it done here and an across the board play for sure.

3 Antiquarian

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Jockey: Manny Franco

Odds: 10-1

Million dollar earner that is double digit odds speaks of the quality in here. Needs to break well and be in the race early if he hopes to get piece of the pie here. Might impact things by speeding things up for the frontrunners, but not the likely winner.

4 Forged Steel

Trainer: Saffie Joseph Jr.

Jockey: Micah Husbands

Odds: 20-1

Hollywood Gold Cup winner that will likely be sent hard out of the gate and could affect the outcome because of helping establish a strong early pace. His pappy Vekoma was all about the speed and the closers in the race want him to go. Only chance here is to hope nobody goes with him out of the gate and with this group, that ain’t happening. Look elsewhere.

5 White Abarrio

Trainer: Saffie Joseph Jr.

Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.

Odds: 8-1

Question here is which White Abarrio shows up, the one that won this race in 2023 and was sensational in the Oaklawn Handicap in April of this year, or the runner that looked tired in finishing fourth in the Stephen Foster last out? Gets the leading rider at the Spa this year and my advice is if you get 8 to 1…bet that joker across the board. Wouldn’t be a complete shocker if he wins.

6 Sovereignty

Trainer: Bill Mott

Jockey: Junior Alvarado

Odds: 3-1

The Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes winner from 2025 is winless in two starts this year. Finished a distant second in April in Oaklawn Handicap and an even farther back third in the Stephen Foster on June 27. Has been in the top three in all 11 career starts with six wins so put him in your exotics. We think he peaked last year.

7 Tiztastic

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Jockey: Tyler Gafflione

Odds: 30-1

Has bounced back and forth between dirt and turf during a career that has seen starts in 11 Stakes races. Closed late to grab third in the Suburban Stakes on July 4 at Saratoga. A horse for your superfecta because his late run could grab a piece and kick up the payout but not a win bet.

8 Baeza

Trainer: Bill Mott

Jockey: Flavien Pratt

Odds: 7-2

Seems to consistently have trouble getting out of the gate then comes with a big late run that provides a glimpse of his talent. Has only two wins in eleven career starts, but has four runner up efforts and three third place finishes. If he ever figures out how to start well he could be very dangerous. Does it happen here?… He has the right jockey so if the price is right play him for sure.
