When a franchise icon returns to face his former club, the reaction from fans can be difficult to predict. Some stars receive a hero’s welcome, while others encounter mixed emotions after leaving in free agency.
That uncertainty surrounded Bo Bichette as he prepared for his first game back in Toronto against the Blue Jays following a high-profile offseason departure to the New York Mets. And as attention centered around that emotional reunion, one player who knew what Bichette’s experience could feel like was Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper.

Harper spent the first years of his highly productive career with the Washington Nationals and he’s typically painted as a villain for that franchise whenever he returns since joining the division rival Phillies.
“He’s still booed in Washington and even sometimes in Philadelphia,” Mitch Bannon reported for The Athletic. “He didn’t expect it, but he understands that’s just how fanbases work.”
While Harper typically endures a negative reaction from his former fans, his message on Bichette’s Blue Jays return reflected a difference.
“Bo had such a great run,” Harper said, according to Bannon. “I think it might be a little different for him.”
Toronto Blue Jays Fans Share Strong Reaction To Bo Bichette Return
Bichette appeared in nearly 750 games for Toronto as a homegrown infielder, and he earned two All-Star selections and helped lead the franchise to multiple postseason appearances before signing elsewhere in free agency.
Ultimately, that legacy helped prove Harper’s prediction to be accurate.
“On the screen was (manager John) Schneider’s snapshot, (Vladimir) Guerrero Jr. hugging Bichette,” the Toronto Sun’s Steve Simmons reported of Bichette’s friendly reception in his return to Canada on Monday. “On the field, Bichette tipped his cap to the fans, tugged at his heart through his uniform, applauded the fans himself. And then after his first at-bat — a fly ball to centre field — he got another standing ovation. In the midst of this dreadful time for the Blue Jays, this is still an audience that never forgets and almost always appreciates.”
That response highlighted the bond Bichette built with Toronto fans during his tenure alongside Guerrero, helping usher in one of the franchise’s most successful stretches in recent memory. And while Harper certainly enjoyed some signature moments for the Nationals, perhaps his own accomplishments on the diamond weren’t enough to earn the same kind of reception after he joined the Phillies.
For Toronto, the ovations served as a reminder that while roster turnover is inevitable in Major League Baseball, players who leave a lasting impact on a franchise can be remembered more fondly than some others.
