What Is Liverpool’s Plan To Replace Mohamed Salah?

It was over two months ago that Mohamed Salah played his final game for Liverpool. With tears in his eyes, the Egyptian bid farewell to the Merseyside club where, over nine glorious years, he won it all. Salah went out as a Liverpool legend and the effort to replace him reached another level.

As things stand, Liverpool has yet to find a successor to Salah. The start of the 2026/27 Premier League season is fast approaching and it’s not clear who will start on the right side of Andoni Iraola’s team. If Liverpool’s plan was to move quickly to replace Salah, it has failed in that objective.

Yan Diomande was widely reported to be Liverpool’s first-choice to replace Salah. However, the Ivorian has reportedly made the decision to join Paris Saint-Germain instead after a World Cup campaign that highlighted Diomande as one of the best young players anywhere in the sport at the moment.

RB Leipzig is reportedly demanding a transfer fee of at least €100m for its prize asset this summer, making a deal for Diomande difficult in the first place. Liverpool, however, spent that and more on Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz last summer, proving a willingness to break the bank when required.

The World Cup might have hindered Liverpool’s efforts in the transfer market, but with the tournament now coming to a close there will surely be a renewed push to find a new right winger. Victor Munoz has come in the door from Osasuna, but the Anfield club surely needs more than just the Spanish international as an option on the wing.

Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh has been mentioned in some quarters as an option. The Gambian certainly has potential, but might not be ready to step into the shoes of someone like Salah for a club like Liverpool. Bradley Barcola is another name in the gossip column, but the French international prefers to operate on the left wing over the right.

Whatever Liverpool’s plan, it must accelerate in the transfer market over the next few weeks. Iraola has taken the reins from Arne Slot over the off-season and needs time on the training field to mould his new team before the start of the 2026/27 campaign which is just over a month away.

Of course, Liverpool still possesses a lot of talent even after Salah’s departure. For starters, Iraola could use this time to forge an understanding between Isak and Hugo Ekitike, who returned to training following injury this week. The vacancy on the right wing, however, must be filled.
