The Philadelphia Phillies ended Nick Castellanos’ tenure in dramatic fashion, cutting him shortly before the season began despite a significant remaining salary.
Castellanos had become a central figure in Philadelphia after signing a five-year, $100 million contract before the 2022 season. He produced 13 home runs and 62 RBIs during his first season with the Phillies and later helped the club reach the 2022 World Series.
But his relationship with the organization deteriorated. Reports surfaced that frustrations had grown between Castellanos and teammates and news surfaced that he had reportedly brought a beer into the dugout after being removed for defensive purposes in a game against the Miami Marlins.
“On the eve of Spring Training, the move came,” AJ Cassavell reported for MLB.com. “Castellanos was released, entering the final year of his five-year deal with Philadelphia. The split was a messy one.”
Since then, the Phillies have had to move forward with a different outfield mix while Castellanos moved on to the San Diego Padres. But that stint was short-lived, as he was released in June after failing to produce much at the plate.
Now it seems he has moved onto an entirely different type of role around the game.

Now, a few months after his last at-bat, Castellanos announced that he will manage the Class of 2027 team at the 2026 All-American Game hosted by independent scouting service Prep Baseball.
“The 2026 event features an elite dugout lineup led by two-time MLB All-Star Nick Castellanos, who is managing the Class of 2027 team,” Prep Baseball reported. “He’s one of the few who knows what it’s like to be in the shoes of these elite incoming seniors, having earned a famous reputation himself while thriving on the national circuit headed into his senior year, just before becoming the No. 44 overall pick in the 2010 Draft.”
Castellanos’ own reaction to the opportunity was characteristically brief.
“Marlins Park, talented kids,” said Castellanos, according to the report. “I’m in.”
While the decision to manage the game did not come with a formal announcement that his own playing days are over, it is a telling change for a former slugger who hasn’t played much this season.
Philadelphia Phillies Move Forward Without Nick Castellanos
The Phillies ultimately decided that their future was better served without Castellanos, creating an opportunity for other outfielders to take on larger roles.
For Castellanos, meanwhile, the All-American Game provides a chance to remain connected to baseball while passing along lessons from a 15-year major league career that included two All-Star selections and a World Series appearance.
It is not necessarily a sign that Castellanos has retired or abandoned hopes of returning to MLB. Instead, the coaching assignment gives him another way to stay involved in the game while showcasing the experience he accumulated as a highly regarded amateur prospect, first-round draft pick and established major league hitter, all in his native Miami.
