ABC News will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with a primetime special, Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After the Storm with Robin Roberts. The one-hour broadcast will be anchored by Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts, a native of the Gulf Coast, who returns to the communities that were forever changed when the Category 5 hurricane made landfall on August 29, 2005.

Hurricane Katrina was a catastrophic 2005 storm that devastated the Gulf Coast, killing 1,392 people (according to the Hurricane Center), displacing over one million residents, and causing a reported $125 billion in damage.

The logline: In the special, Roberts will revisit the streets of her hometown, Pass Christian, Mississippi and speak with residents whose lives were upended in the wake of one of the deadliest and costliest natural disasters in U.S. history. The program will reflect on the staggering destruction left behind, the resilience of those who stayed, and the stories of hope that emerged from tragedy.

Viewers will also “see how the Gulf Coast has transformed over the past two decades, from rebuilding neighborhoods to where it is today.” Roberts will be joined by survivors, first responders, and others who witnessed the devastation with their personal memories.

Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After the Storm with Robin Roberts airs Friday, August 29, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
