An Update On The ‘Fallout’ Season 3 Release Date From Walton Goggins

Fallout remains an enormously popular and beloved video game adaptation on Amazon Prime Video, and is one of the service’s crown jewels. It seems like Fallout has the potential to go on indefinitely, and now, we have some news about season 3’s potential release date, thanks to a new update from star Walton Goggins.

Goggins took to Instagram to show himself getting “back in the saddle” for the arduous process of getting his Ghoul makeup on. So, if Fallout season 3 just started filming now, we should be able to estimate that release date, or window, at least.

  • Fallout season 1 started filming in July 2022, and was released in April 2024, 21 months later.
  • Fallout season 2 started filming in November 2024, 7 months after season 1, and was released in December 2025, 13 months later. That’s a 20-month break in total.
  • So, if we use mainly the season 2 setup, Fallout season 3 is filming in July 2026, and season 2 aired in December 2025, so that’s a break of 7 months again.
  • If filming and post-production take another 13 months like with season 2, that’s an August 2027 release date window, another 20 months after the season 2 premiere.

So, a 20-month gap? Well, in the context of big blockbuster shows that force audiences to wait anywhere from 2 to 3+ years, it could be worse. Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, supposedly the most expensive show ever made, has 2-year breaks between seasons.

There was recently a report about Netflix seeing a huge drop-off in viewership between seasons, which sparked a widespread social media response that the main issue was the lengthy, years-long breaks between seasons. Secondarily, the binge model was also cited, as many series are watched in their entirety in one or two days and then forgotten about. That’s different than say, eight episodes of Fallout airing over two months (so technically, the wait is 18 months between the end of season 2 and the start of season 3). Though a third issue was the fact that 6-8 episode seasons are often too short, which is certainly not a problem exclusive to Netflix.

As for Fallout, it continued to deliver high viewership and excellent critic and audience scores in season 2, breaking away from The Last of Us on HBO, which had a well-liked first season but a much more unsteady second season, especially among game-playing fans. Not so with Fallout, and we’ll see if that carries on to season 3 instead.
