This week, Ariana Grande rules the Official Singles chart, the United Kingdom’s list of the most popular songs in that nation. The pop superstar debuts “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the first taste of her upcoming eighth album Petal, in the highest spot. As Grande conquers the tally for the eighth time, she keeps Sam Fender and Olivia Dean from moving up on an important historic ranking and tying two of the most successful tunes in U.K. history.
Ariana Grande Blocks “Rein Me In” From History
Last week, Dean and Fender ruled the Official Singles chart with “Rein Me In,” their massively popular collaboration. In the almost-year that it has spent on the tally – next week will mark 52 frames on the roster – “Rein Me In” has spent 13 of those moments at No. 1. Last time around, when the team-up was still in charge, it matched Alex Warren’s “Ordinary.” The two cuts remain tied on the list of the longest-running No. 1s ever, sitting side-by-side in seventh place.
“Rein Me In” Could Return to No. 1 Soon
If Grande steps aside in a few days and “Hate That I Made You Love Me” disappears from the Official Singles chart’s penthouse, there’s a high likelihood that “Rein Me In” will gain control over the roster once more, as it only has one rung to climb. If it scores a fourteenth week at the summit, “Rein Me In” will match both “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.” Those smashes spent 14 periods ruling and jointly claim the distinction of being the fifth-longest-running chart-toppers of all time.
The Longest-Runnning No. 1s in U.K. History
The longest any song spent at No. 1 on the U.K. singles tally was 18 weeks. Frankie Laine, an American singer, managed the showing more than half a century ago with “I Believe.” Bryan Adams comes in second place on this all-time roster with “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You,” which ran the show for 16 weeks. Wet Wet Wet’s “Love Is All Around” and Drake’s “One Dance,” which features Wizkid and Kyla, nearly joined Adams, as their singles dominated for 15 weeks.
Olivia Dean and Sam Fender Claim Four Top 10 Smashes
Dean and Fender claim the same number of top 10 hits on the Official Singles chart, as both artists have seen four tracks rise into the highest region. For Fender, “Rein Me In” is his only champion, while Dean counts two rulers. Her own “Man I Need” spent just one stint in first place, while follow-up single “So Easy (To Fall in Love)” only missed out on conquering by one space.
Ariana Grande Scores Her Eighth No. 1
Grande hits No. 1 on the Official Singles chart for the eighth time in her career. With one more winner, she breaks her tie with names like George Michael, Robbie Williams and Michael Jackson, among others, according to the Official Charts Company. She also ties Kylie Minogue, Oasis, The Rolling Stones, Sam Smith and Justin Bieber on the list of acts with the most No. 1s in U.K. history.
Here are all of Ariana Grande’s No. 1s on the Official Singles chart.
“Hate That I Made You Love Me” Rules Almost Every Chart
This week in the U.K., “Hate That I Made You Love Me” is not just the most-consumed track, but also the bestselling. Grande’s latest tune launches atop the Official Singles Sales, Official Singles Downloads, Official Physical Singles and Official Vinyl Singles rankings, in addition to the main songs roster. She misses out on topping the Official Streaming chart, where “Hate That I Made You Love Me” settles for third place as it gets off to a strong start.
