Bali to Lombok: One of the World’s Shortest Jet Flights Takes Off Before Your Coffee Cools

By Jamie McIntyre

Flying between Bali and Lombok feels less like an international-style airline journey and more like a giant airborne bus hop across paradise.

The route, linking Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport with Lombok International Airport, covers only around 120 kilometres and can take as little as 20 to 30 minutes in the air depending on conditions, aircraft type and scheduling.

That has led many travellers and aviation enthusiasts to ask the same question:

Is Bali to Lombok the shortest flight route in the world?

Not quite.

That title belongs to a tiny Scottish island route between Westray and Papa Westray operated by regional airline Loganair. The scheduled commercial flight lasts around 90 seconds and has reportedly been completed in just 53 seconds under favourable winds. In aviation terms, that is less a flight and more a highly committed jump.

Still, the Bali to Lombok route remains one of the shortest regular commercial jet routes anywhere in the world, particularly involving Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft. Passengers barely reach cruising altitude before the captain announces descent preparations.

For many visitors arriving in Indonesia, the short hop offers a striking contrast between two very different islands.

While Bali has become globally famous for tourism, beach clubs, traffic congestion and rapid development, Lombok is increasingly attracting investors, developers and travellers seeking less crowded beaches, larger land opportunities and a more relaxed atmosphere.

The emergence of the Mandalika tourism zone and major infrastructure upgrades in Lombok have accelerated interest from both domestic and international investors. Property developers are increasingly marketing Lombok as “the next Bali,” although supporters argue the island has the opportunity to avoid some of Bali’s overdevelopment mistakes.

As tourism growth and property investment activity continue accelerating in Lombok, the number of flights servicing the island is also expected to rise substantially. Airlines have steadily expanded domestic connections, and aviation industry observers believe Lombok could become one of Indonesia’s fastest-growing secondary tourism aviation hubs over the next decade.

The Bali to Lombok route may therefore become even busier, acting as a high-frequency connector between Bali’s established tourism market and Lombok’s rapidly emerging development sector.

Several airlines, including Jetstar and other regional carriers, have also publicly flagged plans and discussions around expanding direct international access into Lombok from Australia and other regions, reducing reliance on Bali as the primary gateway into eastern Indonesian tourism destinations.

If direct international flights continue expanding, Lombok could eventually transition from being viewed as Bali’s quieter neighbour into becoming a major standalone tourism and investment destination in its own right.

For frequent travellers, the current Bali to Lombok hop has already become almost comedic in its efficiency.

Seatbelt sign off.
Tiny sip of water.
Seatbelt sign back on.

Welcome to Lombok.

In an era where some international flights stretch beyond 17 hours, the Bali to Lombok hop remains one of aviation’s shortest bursts between two rapidly evolving tropical economies.
