The Blue Angels pilot who flew so low over a Pensacola, Florida, beach last week the plane’s vortex blew over umbrellas and chairs said he regrets the flyover, according to a state lawmaker—even as MAGA Republicans cheered the incident as a display of military pride.

Key Facts

The pilot “talked about the weight he’s been carrying since that moment” and was “shaken by what happened,” Florida state Rep. Michelle Salzman, a Republican, said in a Facebook post, detailing her conversation with the pilot.

She said the pilot “holds himself to an incredibly high standard and was deeply affected by falling short of it.”

The reported admission comes as Trump officials and his MAGA base cheered the flyover and attacked critics who said it could have endangered beachgoers.

After video of the Blue Angels demonstration on Wednesday went viral, the Navy said it was reviewing the “circumstances surrounding the maneuver and conducting a thorough safety review to ensure all operations adhere to strict Navy and FAA safety standards.”

The Navy and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth quickly defended the demonstration and declined to issue punishments, with Hegseth posting to X, “The flyovers will continue until morale improves.”

Crucial Quote

“He didn’t make excuses. He didn’t shift blame. He simply talked about the miscalculated turn, something no pilot ever wants to experience, especially one who has dedicated his life to flying at the highest level of precision. More than anything, he talked about the weight he’s been carrying since that moment,” Salzman wrote on Facebook.

Tangent

Eric Trump blamed the media for backlash to the flyover in a post on X, writing, alongside a video of the demonstration, “can’t stand the manufactured outrage by the low-T mainstream media. This was undoubtedly the highlight of these people’s day…” Trump’s comment followed Hegseth’s announcement earlier last week that the military would begin testing all U.S. service members 30 and older for “testosterone deficiency” on an annual basis, a policy that appears to align with Hegseth’s push to make the military more masculine and his opposition to women serving in combat roles.

Key Background

Navy Secretary Hung Cao said there would be “No reprimands. No firings. No problem,” writing on X on Thursday with a video of the Blue Angels flyover, “That’s the sound of Freedom! Semper fi and Hooyah.” The demonstration is one of several controversial flyovers in recent months. Hegseth reversed the suspension of eight Apache pilots who flew attack helicopters at low altitude over the South Carolina coast during a Fourth of July demonstration and he also defended two Army pilots who hovered their helicopters near singer and Trump ally Kid Rock’s Nashville, Tennessee, home in March.
