The Toronto Blue Jays have spent much of the 2026 season focused on filling in for a slew of injuries on the major-league roster.
With players like Alejandro Kirk, Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer and many others going down with significant injuries well before the season got truly underway, the defending American League champions have spent a lot of time shuffling their big-league roster and their minor league depth.
And as the club mixes up its personal groups throughout the organization, it seems to be scouring the independent leagues for players who can provide versatility and experience.
Toronto Blue Jays Add Former Atlanta Braves Shortstop After Conversion To Pitcher
The Blue Jays recently added infielder Beau Philip, a former Atlanta Braves top-60 draft pick who had been playing for the Lake Country DockHounds of the American Association.
The transaction was announced by the American Association earlier this week.
“Dock Hounds transferred the contract of RHP Beau Philip to the Toronto Blue Jays,” the league reported on X, formerly Twitter.
The acquisition of Philip should turn some heads among Blue Jays fans as he was identified as a right-handed pitcher in the report, though he was drafted as a highly touted infielder. He has spent significant time at shortstop, second base and third base while moving through multiple levels of affiliated baseball.
Philip’s path to the Blue Jays organization began when the Atlanta Braves selected him in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Oregon State University. At the time, Oregon State highlighted the accomplishment after Philip became one of the highest-selected position players from the program.
“Oregon State junior shortstop Beau Philip has been selected in the second round, 60th overall by the Atlanta Braves in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Monday,” the school noted at the time. “Philip just completed a junior season for the Beavers that saw him bat .311 with a team-best 14 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 31 runs batted in. Defensively, he was stellar, totaling just six errors in 44 games, all of which were starts.”
Toronto Blue Jays’ New Pitcher Made Big Change After Atlanta Braves Struggles
After signing with the Braves, Philip spent several seasons in the organization’s farm system. He appeared in more than 350 minor league games within the Braves before becoming a free agent. During that stretch, he developed a reputation as a dependable defender capable of handling multiple infield positions, though he struggled offensively.
He abandoned hitting in 2024 and took the mound, logging a 5.45 ERA in his first 19 games in the minor leagues.
Following his departure from the Braves organization toward the end of the 2024 season, Philip continued his career in independent baseball, where he worked his way back onto the radar of major league clubs as a pitcher. His performance with the DockHounds, where he logged a 3.34 ERA in two seasons combined, ultimately convinced Toronto to offer another opportunity in affiliated baseball.
