Vladimir Guerrero Jr. entered the 2026 season expected to anchor the Toronto Blue Jays’ lineup after signing the richest contract in franchise history. Instead, the first half has been defined by a frustrating lack of power, inconsistent production and a club that has struggled to keep pace in the American League playoff race.
As the losses have piled up, so too has the pressure on one of baseball’s highest-paid stars. While the Blue Jays continue searching for answers offensively, Guerrero’s recent struggles have become increasingly difficult for fans to ignore.

The tension reached another level during Toronto’s weekend loss to the Chicago White Sox.
“Sunday, the table was set for Vlad Jr. to make a difference when the Jays had two runners on base and none out against the Chicago White Sox in a 3-0 game,” Frank Zicarelli wrote for the Toronto Sun. “He failed to deliver as the Jays would end the game by hitting into a double play… In the eighth inning, Vlad Jr. struck out swinging as a chorus of boos could be heard.”
The reaction reflected growing frustration from a fan base that expected Guerrero to lead the offense after committing to a franchise-record extension.
“No one is going to feel sorry for someone who is in the first year of a 14-year franchise-record deal worth a total of $500 million, but if he could use a percentage of that money to fix his hitting the proverbial cheque will be in the mail,” Zicarelli added. “Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is beginning to wear his lack of power at home.”

Despite the criticism from the stands, manager John Schneider made it clear that the franchise slugger is not lacking motivation to improve.
“He wants to be the guy,” manager John Schneider said of Guerrero, according to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson. “He’s here for a reason and we signed him for a reason. He’s frustrated like we’re frustrated.”
Those comments suggest that the Blue Jays will be sticking with Guerrero in the middle of the order, even as he underperforms.
But for Toronto fans, at least, patience is becoming harder to maintain. Guerrero’s offensive production remains central to any hopes of climbing back into postseason contention, and Sunday’s boos illustrated how quickly expectations can shift when a franchise player struggles to deliver in key moments.
Whether the home stadium boos prove to be merely a low point or the start of a more significant turning point for Guerrero and the Blue Jays could become one of the defining storylines of the second half.
