As Major League Baseball’s trade deadline approaches, even routine decisions can take on added significance. Contending teams often use the final days before the deadline to evaluate roster flexibility, while rival executives search for clues about who could be available at a good price.

That was the backdrop late last week, when the Toronto Blue Jays made an eye-opening defensive decision involving veteran outfielder George Springer, prompting immediate speculation about a looming transaction.

Toronto Blue Jays Star George Springer Returns To Outfield Amid Trade Speculation

Springer has spent much of the season serving as Toronto’s designated hitter, helping manage his workload while remaining one of the club’s most productive offensive players. That made the recent lineup decision stand out.

“Second appearance of the season in the outfield for Springer,” Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith noted of the alignment before Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. “Gives the clear impression that Blue Jays are putting him there so buyers can get a look at him ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.”

Whether that was the organization’s motivation remains unknown, but the timing naturally drew attention with the deadline less than 24 hours away. And it came following a direct message from the veteran slugger made just hours before.

“I’m here,” Springer told Nicholson-Smith when asked about his so-called 10-and-5 rights, which give him the ability to veto trades out of Toronto. “I love this team. I love this organization, and as far as I know, I’m here.”

Those remarks suggested Springer was focused on remaining in Toronto even as the team sent a clear indication about entertaining trade discussions involving him.

Trade rumors surrounding Springer intensified as rival clubs continued searching for experienced bats, particularly a division club that has been tied to the veteran before..

“The Red Sox are reportedly interested in acquiring a familiar foe, and there’s interest on the player’s side, too,” Kaley Brown wrote for Boston.com. “Springer, a righty, has historically dominated at Fenway Park. In 51 games, he’s slashing .323/.400/.540 with a .940 OPS and 10 home runs. He hit his 300th career home run over the Green Monster last month. Against the Red Sox in general, the results are the same. In 97 total games, he’s averaging .306 with 21 homers and 67 RBI.”

Those numbers help explain why contenders continue monitoring the 36-year-old despite the significant contract attached to him and questions about his ability to stay healthy while playing everyday defense.

With speculation swirling and Toronto facing major roster decisions, the timing of the team’s move of Springer back to the outfield seemed to confirm the idea that he could be traded soon.
