The Toronto Blue Jays entered 2026 with expectations of building on last season’s success, but instead the club has watched its playoff hopes disappear as it seemed some intangible quality from last year’s Cinderella club was lost.
With Toronto preparing to sell at the upcoming trade deadline, attention has naturally shifted to what went wrong this year. And with the overall talent of the team evidently equivalent or even upgraded last year, blame has shifted to a lack of clubhouse camaraderie for the harsh step back.
Toronto Blue Jays All-Star Leader Ernie Clement Sends Bo Bichette Message
One of the few key players from last season to take a step up this year has been second baseman Ernie Clement, who led all of the American League in All-Star votes this season.
When asked if former key clubhouse figure Bo Bichette was a key personality for the team’s identity last year, Clement offered a clear one-word response.
“Definitely,” Clement said, according to the Toronto Star’s Mike Wilner.
Though Bichette was replaced with veteran Japanese star Kazuma Okamoto on the roster, Clement acknowledged that the clubhouse has not felt the same without him or fellow veteran teammate Chris Bassitt, who joined the Baltimore Orioles in free agency.
“(Chris Bassitt) and Bo are two guys who had been around,” Clement added, per Wilner. “They knew how to win. Any clubhouse wants guys like that and misses guys like that.’”
The comments come as Toronto continues searching for answers during a season that has fallen well short of expectations.

Though the Blue Jays replaced Bichette and Bassitt with a number of star additions in the winter, consistent injuries and an evident lack of on-field “magic” have clearly taken their toll this season.
“There’s no magic in the 2026 Jays, with the team stuck in neutral — or worse, in reverse — for the better part of what’s been an extremely disappointing season,” Wilner wrote. “The success of last year is just a memory as the Jays have tumbled to last place, set to be sellers at the trade deadline for the second time in three seasons.”
But Bichette hasn’t been faring any better this season either. After a prolonged slump to start the season with the New York Mets, he has been better, but his new team is well out of the playoff race and headed toward selling as well.
“I can’t do anything about those first two months,” Bichette recently told the New York Post’s Mike Puma. “I wish I had gotten off to the better start and who knows if the season would have gone differently not just for me, but for the team as a whole. I can’t do anything about it.”
For Toronto, Clement’s candid assessment serves as another reminder that replacing production is only part of the challenge. Veteran leadership and clubhouse chemistry are much harder to quantify, and as the Blue Jays prepare for another deadline sell-off, the absence of players like Bichette and Bassitt appears to be felt well beyond the box score.
