Hours after glowing social media previews went online, many calling Spider-Man: Brand New Day better than the three movies that came before it, official reviews have now been released. Its Rotten Tomatoes critic review score is in, though it keeps fluctuating as more reviews are added.
As it stands, with over 70 reviews in, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, a great number by any standard. That does, however, make it the lowest-scored Spider-Man movie of the last trilogy. The numbers:
- Spider-Man: Homecoming – 92% critic score, 87% audience score
- Spider-Man: Far From Home – 91% critic score, 95% audience score
- Spider-Man: No Way Home – 93% critic score, 97% audience score
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day – 90% critic score, N/A audience score
But at this point, we’re talking about the difference between a couple of percentage points here and there, and this is still well outperforming almost all other Marvel features in the post-Endgame era. A list of the most recent ones:
- Fantastic Four: First Steps – 86% critic score
- Thunderbolts – 88% critic score
- Captain America: Brave New World – 46% critic score
- Deadpool and Wolverine – 77% critic score
- The Marvels – 63% critic score
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – 82% critic score
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – 46% critic score
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – 84% critic score
- Thor: Love and Thunder – 64% critic score
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – 73% critic score
The last film that scored above a 90%? Well, that would be the aforementioned Spider-Man: No Way Home and its 993% score all the way back in 2021. So yes, it’s been a long time since Marvel has seen a movie this good.
Whether it goes up or down by a few percentage points, that is likely to do nothing to the unshakable upcoming box office performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is all-but guaranteed to be the highest-earning Marvel film since No Way Home brought in an astonishing $1.92 billion, one of the biggest films ever made. Could Brand New Day get that high? That seems like a reach, even for Spidey, but at this point, I don’t think we can rule anything out about how it might perform.
That’s especially true with a relatively clear summer ahead of it, minus lingering performance from The Odyssey, another film set to make over a billion dollars this year, though with an R-rating and no superheroes. Well, weren’t Greek gods sort of the original superheroes?
