FC Barcelona is expected to make a new signing for the first team this week according to SPORT and MARCA, citing anonymous sources.

Joao Cancelo should become Barça’s latest signing for the first team in a matter of days.

The Catalans have already agreed to pay Newcastle United $80 million for the transfer of Anthony Gordon.

After a slow start at the World Cup, the left winger has put in two solid performances for England in the knockout rounds with key roles in wins against DR Congo (where he provided two assists) and Mexico.

Another World Cup 2026 star could soon become a permanent fixture for Hansi Flick’s squad in Cancelo.

Portugal has disappointed an expectant nation by losing 1-0 to Lamine Yamal’s Spain on Monday night in the last 16 despite being one of the favorites.

Cancelo is set to return to Al-Hilal in theory. Yet it is expected he’ll sign for FC Barcelona for the next two seasons any day now, as part of a transfer that won’t exceed $11.4 million (€10 million) in fixed money and variables.

Talks are said to be “very advanced” between the La Liga and Saudi Pro League clubs. All that remains to be resolved are some tax issues in Cancelo’s contract, given the near six months he spent in Catalonia in 2026 after joining the Blaugrana for a second time on loan during the winter.

Cancelo’s FC Barcelona transfer is a no brainer

Many grimaced when they heard Cancelo was joining Barça again in January. Those with that kind of reaction remembered his chaotic first stint under Xavi Hernandez, and disasters such as the 2023/2024 Champions League quarterfinal second leg loss to Paris Saint-Germain in Montjuic.

Under Flick, though, Cancelo became a revelation that ended up pushing La Masia product Alejandro Balde out of the starting XI. His versatility means that Cancelo can play on either flank in defence or in advanced positions on the wing.

Put simply, it will be difficult for FC Barcelona to find a profile like Cancelo’s, with all his international and elite club level experience, anywhere else on the market for such a bargain price. Once more, Joan Laporta’s relationship with super agent Jorge Mendes has proven key in getting a great deal over the line.
