It’s been nearly half a century since Fleetwood Mac released Rumours, which would go on to be called not only a masterpiece, but one of the bestselling albums of all time. The project is still popular today, and it never disappears from a number of competitive charts in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.
In the latter nation, the English/American pop-rock outfit also typically scores multiple hits each week. It’s not unusual for the group to fill three spaces on the Official Singles chart, the most allowed per frame per lead act by the Official Charts Company. That’s the case again this time around, and as a trio of Fleetwood Mac classics rank among the 100 most popular songs in the U.K., one fan favorite soars to a never-before-seen peak.
Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” Hits a New High
On this week’s Official Singles chart, “Dreams” stands out as Fleetwood Mac’s highest-rising smash. The track, which has taken on new significance among younger generations in the past decade or so, vaults from No. 66 all the way to No. 18. Amazingly, that is now the all-time peak for “Dreams” on the most competitive songs list in the U.K.
“Dreams” Reaches Its New Peak After 170 Weeks
“Dreams” reaches its newly-set best placement 170 weeks into its time on the Official Singles chart. Fleetwood Mac launched the song just outside the top 40 in July 1977, and it had been pushed as the second promotional cut from Rumours only a few months prior. “Dreams” would dance into the top 40 the following frame, and during its initial run, the catchy composition topped out at No. 24.
“Dreams” then returned to the Official Singles chart in 2011 for a short stint, and since 2020, the blockbuster has appeared on the ranking with regularity. Typically, the Rumours smash sits beneath the top 40, but now it proves its unceasing popularity once more by bolting higher than ever.
Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours Finally Scores a Top 20
Almost half a century after Rumours first took over the world, the album produces its first top 20 hit on the Official Singles chart in the U.K. – a feat that is hard to believe, considering its sustained popularity throughout the decades. Lead single “Don’t Stop” rose to No. 32, “You Make Loving Fun” stopped short at No. 45, and “The Chain,” which shockingly did not make it to the Official Singles tally until April 2009, has only ever climbed to No. 67.
Several tunes from the full-length have reached the top 20 – and beyond – on lesser tallies, such as those centered around sales or streams – but never on the main singles chart.
“Dreams” Also Rises on the Streaming Chart
“Dreams” appears on two U.K.-based rankings this week, and it surges on both of them. On the Official Streaming chart, “Dreams” pushes from No. 64 to No. 38. Unlike on the Official Singles tally, however, that does not mark a new high point, as in the past it has bounded all the way to No. 27.
Fleetwood Mac Fills Three Spaces This Week
Fleetwood Mac fills the three allotted spaces on the Official Singles chart this week with a trio of hits that often rank among the most-consumed in the U.K. “Everywhere” climbs from No. 81 to No. 24, while “Landslide” slips, backtracking from No. 43 to No. 50.
“The Chain” doesn’t appear on the main songs chart, but it does return to two separate lists. That Rumours composition reenters the Official Streaming and Official Singles Downloads charts at Nos. 91 and 93, respectively.
