Hayden Panettiere Started Out Early

Panettiere’s career began at all of 11 months, appearing in a Playskool toy train commercial. From the age of four, she landed larger and larger roles on long-running soap operas like One Life To Live and Guiding Light, the latter of which got her widespread recognition for her portrayal of a child with leukemia.

Millennials might recognize her credit in 1998 animated film A Bug’s Life, where the then-nine year old voiced Princess Dot. Panettiere earned a Grammy nomination for this role, under the Best Spoken Word Album for Children category. She was one of the Academy’s youngest-ever nominees at the time.

She then went on to star in Disney film Remember the Titans opposite Denzel Washington in 2000, and the film credits started pouring in.

More notable film credits included Raising Helen (2004), Tiger Cruise (2004) Ice Princess (2005), Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006), Scream 4 (2011) and most recently. Scream VI (2023). 2005’s Ice Princess saw Panettiere feature opposite fellow child star Michelle Trachtenberg, who sadly passed away in 2025 at the age of 39.

Hayden Panettiere’s TV Career

Her first lead role in a TV show, was playing Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes. Bennet starred in a large ensemble cast as a highschool cheerleader with powers of spontaneous regeneration. The show’s tagline was about her character — “Save the cheerleader, save the world” — and melded into the cultural lexicon of the 2000s. The show ran until 2010 and made her one of the most recognisable faces on American TV at the time. She was 16 when it premiered.

TV is also what gave her a Golden Globe nomination; Panettiere’s role as teenage country sensation Juliette Barnes in Nashville led to a Golden Glob noms for Best Supporting Actress in both 2013 and 2014. Her character’s six-season arc required her to play addiction, postpartum depression, and professional ambition simultaneously.

In a tell-all cover story in 2022, Panettiere told People Magazine that she could “relate to a lot of those storylines like the alcoholism and postpartum depression. They hit close to home.”

Hayden Panettiere’s Battle With Fame

Much like many celebrities who began their careers at early ages, Panettiere has been candid about the costs that came with fame and fortune.

In interviews tied to her May 2026 memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, she described being “groomed” to be a “little soldier” throughout her early career.

When she was around 15, she said, members of her team began giving her what she believed were amphetamines before red carpet appearances and interviews to make her “peppy.” “I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction,” she told People back in 2022.

She also struggled with paparazzi disdain for her privacy and youth, often being the subject of inappropriate snaps while still a minor.

“My publicist would get a call asking for comment about something about my life, and I’d have to decide, do I go no comment and let them put out whatever version they want? Or do I comment to get ahead of it, but be forced to talk about things that I really don’t want to?” she told the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year.

In a two-hour interview with influencer Jay Shetty earlier this year, Panettiere elaborated on one of the many alarming, endangering situations she was placed into as a young star.

She was only 18 when someone she had “grown to trust” as a person who “had her back,” put her “in the bed next to this undressed man who was very famous”, on a yacht.

She said she ran away and tried to hide somewhere else on the boat. “There was no jumping off and swimming away,” said Panettiere. “And there was nobody who was going to be empathetic to my situation. I realized that this was nothing new to them.”

The postpartum depression that followed the birth of her daughter in 2014 (the father is former world heavyweight boxing champion and then-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko) became, according to her, the condition under which her addiction escalated, now becoming dependent on alcohol and Klonopin, a central nervous system depressant.

“People around me were more concerned about my usage of alcohol than they ever were about the postpartum depression,” she said in a joint interview with Good Morning America and People in July 2022. “I wanna be that strong, stoic woman. But when you see a happy-go-lucky girl for years suddenly on the floor in a puddle of mess and alcohol, you gotta know something is wrong.”

She wrote in her memoir that a doctor told her she would “be dead within five years” if she did not stop drinking. The addiction at the time helped her to distance herself from ongoing struggles like being away from her daughter and being in an abusive relationship with actor Brian Hickerson, she told People.

“I don’t regret even the ugliest things that have happened to me,” she said in the same interview. “I feel incredibly accomplished. And I feel like I have a second chance.”

Hayden Panettiere Was A Sister

Hayden Panettiere was an actor, singer and activist (she served as spokesperson for the Whaleman Foundation, an oceanic conservation organisation), but she was also an invested sibling. Her younger brother Jansen passed in 2023 at the age of 28, of aortic valve complications arising from cardiomegaly. He was also an actor, starting his career at 8 with an episode of Even Stevens.

In 2024, she gave a cover interview to People magazine about the loss, describing how his death had caused her to develop agoraphobia and left her unrecognisable to herself.

“He was my only sibling, and he was my younger sibling, and it was my job to protect him,” she said.

Remembering The Losses of 2026

Panettiere joins a 2026 that has already taken more than its share. So far, we have already lost Eric Dane, best known as McSteamy on Grey’s Anatomy to ALS , and James Van Der Beek to cancer. Robert Duvall, one of the great American actors of the 20th century, also passed in February.

Anthony Head, whose work stretched from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Ted Lasso, died in June and Bonnie Tyler, whose voice defined a generation of power ballads, passed in July.
