How Taylor Swift’s Wedding Could Easily Top $20 Million

Romantics never believed that Taylor Swift—the tortured poet of pop music—would sacrifice a fairytale wedding for a blowout party at Madison Square Garden, but here we are. An increasing pile of evidence suggests the billionaire bride will do just that when she holds a giant celebration this weekend at the world’s most famous arena.

According to reporting by the New York Times, Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce have booked the Garden—which can hold around 20,000 people and where Swift has performed eight times in her career—for a 100-person event on July 2 (likely a rehearsal dinner) as well as a second celebration for between 500 and 999 guests on July 3. There were also permits filed with the city by Winick Productions to close the streets around the venue from Thursday to midday Saturday on July 4th weekend.

Based on interviews with a half-dozen luxury event planning sources estimating everything from securing the iconic venue to elaborate florals and tight security, Forbes estimates the Swift-Kelce festivities will cost at least $20 million—on par with the lavish Venice nuptials of billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez that captured the world last summer.

CHAMPAGNE PROBLEMS, ARENA BUDGET

Los Angeles-based celebrity wedding planner Mark Seed—who also planned the weddings of Jennifer Lawrence to art gallerist Cooke Maroney and Swift’s close friend, producer Jack Antonoff to actress Margaret Qualley—has also been linked to this weekend’s festivities. Celebrity planners in New York frequently charge tens of thousands of dollars for such events and often take 10% to 20% of an overall wedding budget, meaning six-figure fees are commonplace for the largest and most luxe events. Renowned New York wedding and event planner Lindsay Landman estimates that the challenges of this particular wedding could push fees into the realm of 25%, which would mean at least a $5 million bill for planning alone.

A-list wedding and event planners have also tell Forbes that MSG—which could cost up to $5 million to rent for the weekend—will be broken up into separate themed spaces for cocktails, dinner and an after party with Swift-approved fanciful touches like garden-inspired pathways, soft lighting and sky-high wildflower installations. David Tutera, who designed weddings for Elton John, Jennifer Lopez and other celebrities, says it would be possible to bring in “trucks” of trees and plants “to make it feel like you’re out in the woods, in a very romantic and special space. I feel like that’s the vibe for her, and for him. It’s not over the top, it’s soft, etherical, magical, feminine, and feeling like you’re walking through the woods.”

Forklifts were seen Tuesday afternoon unloading semitrucks worth of wrapped decor and boxes labeled “trees” into the Garden, and the New York Post’s Page Six speculated the couple would have a castle built inside the venue. The flower budget alone could cost upwards of $3 million, according to New York City wedding planner Sonal Shah, not including millions more in draping to cover thousands of MSG seats, as well as chandeliers to lower the ceiling, floor covering and wrapping, temporary stages, lighting, event rentals and other decor that could easily cost another $3 million.

Landman, who served as the 2022 wedding planner for former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg, said she expects catering and bar costs will amount to at least $1,250 per person—or about $1 million for 750 guests—plus another $75,000 for kitchen rentals and service. Reports indicate Swift has personally curated food stations for the MSG celebration with dishes from her favorite New York City restaurants, which include West Village favorites Via Carota and Waverly Inn and Midtown’s Monkey Bar. Even if Swift is sourcing menu items from a variety of restaurants, plus an assortment of fine wines and cocktails to pair them with, celebrity party planner Colin Cowie says it’s the required “world class” service from wait staff that will make or break the event—and show up in the bottom line.
