Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, the latest horror movie from the Evil Dead Rise filmmaker, premieres on digital streaming this week as the film clears the $88 million mark at the worldwide box office.
Written and directed by Cronin, the filmmaker’s new take on the mummy movie genre opened in theaters on April 17 and earned $13.5 million domestically and $21.5 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $34 million in its first weekend.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy stars Jack Reynor and Laia Costa as Charlie and Larissa Canon, a couple raising their two children in Cairo while Charlie, a television journalist, is on assignment in Egypt. One day, when the Cannons’ daughter, Katie (Emily Mitchell), is playing in the couple’s backyard, she disappears without a trace.
Eight years later, the Cannons — who moved home to Arizona after their daughter’s disappearance — receive a call from the U.S. Embassy in Egypt to learn that Katie (Natalie Grace) has been found in a 3,000-year-old sarcophagus. Unbeknownst to the couple, their daughter was subject to a terrifying ritual and emerges from her slumber in a catatonic state that quickly turns into a living nightmare for the family.
Having dropped to 178 North American theaters over the weekend, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is nearing the end of its domestic theatrical run. Through Sunday, the film has earned $29 million domestically and $59.1 million for a worldwide box office tally of $88.1 million.
While an $88.1 million seems like a paltry return given that the film was released by Warner Bros., Lee Cronin’s The Mummy still can be deemed a financial success for the studio since it had a production budget of $22 million before marketing expenses, according to Deadline.
It is pretty safe to say that Warner Bros. had higher hopes for The Mummy, given that Cronin’s previous film for the studio, 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. Produced by the original Evil Dead franchise’s filmmakers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell, Evil Dead Rise earned $67.3 million domestically and $79.9 million internationally for a global gross of $147.2 million against a $15.2 million production budget before marketing.
