Lucky’s Confession In Episode 6 Breaks John’s Trust At The Worst Time

Lucky Strikes a Deal with Billie

At the top of “Wherever You Go, There You Are,” John is riding high on Lucky’s brilliance. He doesn’t like being in FBI custody but he trusts that his daughter will execute a plan that saves both of their hides. As she angles for the deal they want, he antagonizes Billie but the agent isn’t having it.

Billie pulls a card that she knows will get under John’s skin. They’re in this conference room because of Lucky’s efforts. Lucky is the one with the leverage to get them a deal, not John. But Billie makes sure to note that she’s the one with the better hand by having Gates rattle off the list of charges the father-daughter duo will be brought up on.

The FBI has them for RICO, money laundering, wire fraud, theft of government property, conspiracy, and identity theft. That’s before the state of California takes its own piece over the incident with the chase through La Jolla when Cary (Drew Starkey) shot at law enforcement. Lucky’s looking at life in prison and Billie has every intention on sending John to ADX Florence, the “Alcatraz of the Rockies,” if they don’t cooperate.

When Lucky verbally lashes out at Billie, the agents leave the room, but Lucky quickly calls her back. She needs this deal, so she agrees to Billie’s terms. She’ll get her Priscilla and Whittaker.

Why John Was In Prison On ‘Lucky’

The FBI put Lucky and John up at a hotel with two guards watching the door and the hallways. The plush bed and hot shower are John’s first real taste of relaxation in two years. However, his mind is still on the money he knows is in Lucky’s possession. She won’t give Billie the 12 word seed phrase to Cary’s crypto account until she’s met the terms of the deal that she’s requested to be in writing, signed, and notarized.

As they lounge in fluffy, white robes, John asks about her plan to ensure they keep the money. Lucky’s caught off guard as she explains that the money is how she’s buying their freedom. His incredulous response opens the door to a fight that escalates quickly.

Lucky finally tells her dad about her loneliness that he caused. How she buried it because he refused to see it and that all she wanted as a child was stability and normalcy. When she should have been making friends, going to school, and developing crushes on boys in her class, she was running cons with him.

They never could settle in one place because of his greed. John always got in his own way and hers. With Whittaker, he got in over his head and she was the one who had to pull him out. Letting that bit of information slip, she had to tell John what she’d done.

He’d siphoned $10 million from Whittaker and, to protect her father, Lucky worked with Billie to put Priscilla away. But she’d mistakenly trusted the agent and John was caught up in the arrest as well when he was supposed to have immunity. Billie had gone back on her word.

Angered by her confession, John calls Lucky an idiot and accuses her of taking everything from him. The following day, John’s hesitant to sign the deal but he does it. However, he can’t bring himself to say anything to Lucky as she leaves to see Priscilla to set up the meeting with Whittaker.

Lucky meets Priscilla at her home. The two discuss the $10 million John stole, which Lucky will hand over to Whittaker to ensure her and John keep their lives. Priscilla laughs at the idea that her former daughter-in-law is just going to “buy” her freedom with Whittaker’s own money. But Lucky is insistent that if she doesn’t have a face-to-face to him where she can give it to him herself then there’s no deal.

Priscilla concedes to Lucky’s wishes with a stipulation. She’ll be there to facilitate the meet-up and talk Whittaker into the deal. They also won’t be meeting at the Regency hotel like Lucky wants, it’ll be a location of the mob boss’ choosing.

It’s not ideal for Billie’s plan, but Lucky doesn’t push because she doesn’t want to give the game away. When she informs Billie of how her talk with Priscilla went, she’s clear to move ahead with the next phase of the plan. Though it’ll mean the agent has to improvise, there’s too much on the line to back out.

After being taken to task by Billie for his hypocrisy when it comes to parenting, John had the whole day to think about the ways in which he failed Lucky. The time to reflect means that once she’s back at the hotel he can tell her that he’s sorry. He shares that he didn’t know what to do when her mother died and he was left to raise a baby on his own.

John’s aware now that he should have gotten her out of the life instead of teaching her how to survive in it but the latter was all he knew how to do at the time. He hugs Lucky and the two reconcile.

How Gates Dies In ‘Lucky’ Episode 6

The next morning, with a mic installed in her jacket, Lucky’s being prepped to finally take Whittaker down. John warns her to be wary of Priscilla. She becomes a different person when she’s around her boss. Their complicated history flares, and she’s much more dangerous than she usually is.

John can’t go with Lucky. He’s to stay in the hotel while Lucky is sent out into the field to the location of Whittaker’s choosing, an area so open that’s it’s impossible for the FBI to stage agents in the vicinity. She’s at risk but what Lucky and Billie don’t know is that the hotel is about to be compromised.

As John and Gates are playing cards, with the con man still working on charming the agent, the first guard assigned outside in the hallway drops. Gates hears it, but John says he didn’t. When he can’t get the agent to respond to him on the radio, Gates goes to check it out.

In the hallway, a man starts firing. Gates shoots back and kills the man, but he’s unprepared for another one to get the drop on him. The second assailant shoots Gates multiple times before he deals the killing blow with a shot to the head. Hearing the commotion, John calls for Gates only for the assailant to kick through the door.

“Wherever You Go, There You Are” ends with the identity of the second gunmen still a mystery. The only thing that is clear is that John is a man who plays the long game. Friend or foe, he’s going to look at the hand he’s been dealt and find a way through. Trouble is, his solutions tend to blow back on Lucky and her past misstep with the FBI could lead to John making choices that throw the deal she’s struck into the fire.
