When a disappointing season begins to spiral, clubhouse dynamics often become just as important as the actual talent on the field. For the New York Mets, questions about chemistry have lingered since last year, which also ended in disappointment, particularly surrounding two of the franchise’s biggest stars.
Those questions resurfaced this week after new details emerged about an internal effort to strengthen the relationship between Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor. The latest revelation, however, seemed to expose more of a rift between the two players.
New York Mets Superstars Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor Disagree On Sitdown Meeting
According to a new report, veteran pitcher Freddy Peralta, who was just traded from the Mets to the Tampa Bay Rays, organized a sitdown conversation earlier this season between Soto and Lindor in an attempt to improve their relationship and help a team that was quickly falling out of contention.
“Veteran pitcher Freddy Peralta, whose brief tenure with the New York Mets ended unceremoniously Sunday with his trade to Tampa Bay, called a meeting earlier this season for franchise cornerstones Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor to clear the air,” according to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo. “Peralta confirmed that the meeting occurred but declined to disclose details of the conversation.”
But perhaps the most revealing aspect of the report was that the two superstars offered conflicting descriptions on the public record.
The pair couldn’t agree on whether or not the sitdown meeting even took place, with Lindor confirming to ESPN that “it was more of a conversation” in Spanish, and Soto denying that such a sitdown ever happened.
That disagreement comes as the Mets continue searching for answers during a disappointing season that has placed increasing attention on both their on-field performance and clubhouse leadership.
New York Mets Clubhouse Issues Follow Juan Soto And Francisco Lindor
The report is hardly the first indication that the relationship between the two franchise cornerstones isn’t as amiable as it could be.
“Earlier this season, one club source indicated the dynamic remained somewhat strained, and other club sources described a full-court press by recently fired manager Carlos Mendoza to help the two superstars build a stronger relationship, one that last year drew heavy scrutiny,” Will Sammon reported for The Athletic last month.
Those concerns echoed reports that surfaced after last season’s disappointing finish, when multiple outlets described tension between Soto and Lindor inside the clubhouse. While neither player has publicly suggested the relationship has become unmanageable, the conflicting accounts of Peralta’s meeting suggest that things are not as smooth as they might be.
And for a Mets team that just tore down the roster in hopes of returning to contention next year, the pair of Soto and Lindor are two of the only star pieces remaining.
