Curry Barker’s horror thriller Obsession, starring Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston, is reportedly coming soon to digital streaming as the film maintains its incredible hold in theaters worldwide.
Written and directed by Barker, Obsession opened in theaters on May 15. Acquired by Focus Features at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival for $15 million, Obsession had a production budget of $750,000 before marketing costs. The film came screaming out of the gate in its opening weekend, earning $17.1 million from 2,615 North American theaters, followed by an unprecedented 39% increase in business in its second weekend domestically, followed by a 14% increase in ticket sales in its third weekend.
While Obsession’s box office numbers began to drop on its fourth weekend of release — but only by a mere 7% — business continued to be strong with only a 25% drop in the film’s fifth weekend domestically, followed by a 30 percent drop in its sixth weekend. Through Monday, Obsession has earned nearly $217.4 million in domestic ticket sales and $117 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $334 million.
While Obsession is still hanging tough in the domestic box office top five, it appears that the film is finally going to make its home entertainment debut. According to When to Stream, Obsession will arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, June 30. While When to Stream is typically accurate with its PVOD reports, the streaming tracker noted that Focus Features has not announced or confirmed the PVOD release date and it is subject to change.
When Obsession arrives on PVOD, it will be available for digital purchase or rent on such platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube Movies & TV. Generally, new PVOD titles are available for purchase anywhere from $19.99 to $29.99, or rent for anywhere from $14.99 to $24.99 for a 48-hour period.
What Is ‘Obsession’ About?
In Obsession, Michael Johnston plays Bear, a music store employee who has a hopeless crush on his co-worker, Nikki (Inde Navarrette). When it appears that the two are never going to be anything more than friends, Bear uses a new age novelty gift called a “One Wish Willow” and wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone in the world.
When it becomes apparent that Bear’s wish came true, Nikki’s love for him escalates into a dangerous, obsessive behavior that turns deadly.
Obsession also stars Megan Lawless, Andy Richter and Curry Barker’s frequent collaborator Cooper Tomlinson.
The PVOD release of Obsession marks a huge departure from the streaming strategy usually employed by Focus Features, which gives the Universal Pictures’ specialty studio the option to release its films on PVOD after they play for 17 days in theaters. According to World of Reel, that was originally the plan for Obsession, but given the film’s immense success, its original streaming date of June 2 was scrapped.
The move to make Obsession available for theatrical viewing only was no doubt a good move for Focus.
Not only did Obsession become Focus Features’ highest-grossing film in the history of the studio when it crossed the $200 million mark on June 8, but it also became the highest-grossing film festival acquisition of all time last week when it surpassed the global tally earned by the 1999 indie horror classic The Blair Witch Project. By week’s end, Obsession achieved another box office milestone when it crossed the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office.
Obsession will reportedly be released on PVOD on June 30.
