Olivia Dean first impacted the Billboard charts in America within the last year or so, and it didn’t take her long to become an industry darling. Dean quickly snapped up the Best New Artist Grammy, and her most recent album, The Art of Loving, has turned her into a stateside hitmaker thanks to smashes like “Man I Need” and “So Easy (To Fall in Love).”
In the United Kingdom, Dean has been racking up hit songs for nearly half a decade at this point, but the past two years have been extremely lucrative for the singer-songwriter. Dean has collected two No. 1s on the Official Singles chart in that nation, and as she holds in the top spot yet again, she climbs on the list of the longest-running No. 1 songs of all time, tying with one of the sturdiest wins ever.
Olivia Dean and Sam Fender Rule for a Fifteenth Week
Dean, alongside Sam Fender, rules the Official Singles chart this frame with “Rein Me In.” The track is featured on Fender’s album People Watching and was originally a solo cut. In an effort to turn “Rein Me In” into a proper smash, he brought Dean onto a remix, turning it into a duet – and a blockbuster. “Rein Me In” is steady atop the Official Singles tally, and it has now dominated for 15 nonconsecutive weeks.
“Rein Me In” Ties a Historic Smash
As the high-profile collaboration earns its milestone fifteenth turn in the spotlight, “Rein Me In” ties as the third longest-running ruler in the more than half-century-long tenure of the Official Singles chart. It is one of only four tracks to spend 15 frames or more running the show. As it refuses to budge, “Rein Me In” ties “Love Is All Around” by Wet Wet Wet. That smash topped the rundown for 15 periods more than three decades ago, in 1995.
“Rein Me In” May Make History Again
It seems highly likely that “Rein Me In” will score at least one more stint in first place on the Official Singles chart, based on how well it continues to perform when it comes to sales and streams, which power the main tally. The song may stay exactly where it is when the Official Charts Company refreshes its rankings, or if it is forced aside, Fender and Dean may find their way back to the peak position.
If that does happen, “Rein Me In” will break its match with “Love Is All Around” and tie “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” by Bryan Adams as the second longest-running No. 1 in U.K. history. The Canadian crooner dropped “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” in the summer of 1991, and it helped power both the soundtrack album Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as the singer-songwriter’s own full-length Waking Up the Neighbours.
“Rein Me In” will have to lead the charge for nearly another month before it ties with the longest-running No. 1 hit of all time. Frankie Laine’s “I Believe” managed an incredible 18 weeks atop the roster. Since its stretch in 1953, no other hit has challenged it for that record.
“Rein Me In” Remains a Streaming Smash
Plays of “Rein Me In” on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and others are largely to thank for its continued success. “Rein Me In” is comfortable once again at No. 2 on the Official Streaming chart. The tune lives inside the top 20 on two of the three sales rankings on which it appears, and the collaboration reenters the Official Physical Singles ranking at No. 84.
