The Philadelphia Phillies have seen several notable former players depart for new opportunities in recent months as the organization continues to reshape its roster around a veteran core chasing another World Series appearance.
Former sluggers like Nick Castellanos and Max Kepler have been involved in notable transactions with other National League competitors earlier this week. And now, one of the most notable departures from earlier in this season has gotten an update as well.
Veteran right-hander Taijuan Walker, whose four-year tenure in Philadelphia came to an abrupt end with a release after a difficult start to the 2026 campaign, has walked away from his new team.
“Taijuan Walker had an out in his minor league deal so he was released,” The Orange County Register’s Jeff Fletcher reported earlier this week.

After opting out of his latest deal, Walker could be looking to continue his career with a third team this season.
“Walker will once again explore free agency in search of new opportunities,” Steve Adams noted for MLB Trade Rumors. “Even if the Angels prefer other in-house options to step into the fifth spot in the rotation, there are plenty of other clubs around the league whose starting staffs have been ravaged by health troubles.”
Walker’s opt out came just a few weeks after he signed a minor-league deal with the Angels, which came shortly after his release from the Phillies as it became clear he’d be unable to contribute meaningfully as part of the team’s pitching staff.
Walker performed relatively well for the Angels’ organization in his short stint.
“After being released by the Phillies in April, Walker inked a minor-league deal with the Halos last month,” RotoWire reported. “He appeared in three games in the minors with Los Angeles’ organization and recorded a 2.45 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 9:4 K across 11 innings. The 33-year-old will look for an opportunity elsewhere.”

Walker arrived in Philadelphia with significant expectations after signing a four-year, $72 million contract before the 2023 season. The deal initially appeared reasonable and Walker was agreeable to a move to the bullpen toward its end, but the partnership ultimately failed to deliver the stability that the Phillies envisioned.
The Phillies officially released Walker earlier this year once a disastrous start to the season opened the door for other pitching options on the major-league roster. His departure became one of the more expensive misses of the Dave Dombrowski era and marked a disappointing ending to what was once expected to be a key rotation addition.
At age 33, though, the former All-Star’s baseball journey continues. After being released by the Phillies and now walking away from the Angels after only a few weeks, his path back to a major-league rotation remains uncertain but he’s likely to find a new home pitching somewhere or other.
