The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of baseball’s hottest clubs since Don Mattingly took over as interim manager, putting themselves firmly back into the National League playoff race. But with the MLB trade deadline rapidly approaching, the team seemed to take a step back against the Los Angeles Dodgers in their recent series and it made some roster needs pretty clear.
Philadelphia has long operated with a win-now mindset, and that reality has sparked renewed discussion about whether the front office will be able to make the kinds of additions that put the team over the top this year. Recently, the club’s franchise slugger offered a laundry list of needs for the front office to consider.
Philadelphia Phillies Superstar Bryce Harper Suggests $40 Million Trade
The Phillies’ star first baseman Bryce Harper recently outlined why he believes this year’s deadline presents a unique opportunity for contenders such as his team to acquire expensive veterans.
Discussing the league’s financial landscape under the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA), Harper noted that he believes there will be a lockout and missed games next season, meaning that a team like the Phillies should be more willing to add high-price salaries to the payroll at the deadline.
“You’re going to have nobody in the middle this year because of the CBA,” Harper said during an appearance on the “On Base With Mookie Betts” show. “If you go get a player that’s worth 40 (million dollars) a year, next year’s kind of a wash. For right now, it’s a wash. We don’t know what’s going to happen… As an organization, you can kind of sit there and go, ‘OK, well, we’ll pay x amounts of dollars for this guy for the rest of the season, based on not having to pay full salary next year.’”
That financial explanation led directly into Harper’s broader message about the type of roster additions he’d like to see Philadelphia pursue.
“I’m hoping that we can get to the point where we do have the guys that we can go out and get other big-league ready guys, or a frontline starter or the right-handed bat or bullpen,” Harper added.
Philadelphia Phillies’ Bryce Harper Lays Out Several Trade Deadline Needs For Team’s Roster
While Harper didn’t name any specific trade targets, his comments highlighted several areas of need, sending a clear message to the front office that it should be willing to take on significant salaries and add any number of ready contributors.
And Harper’s wishlist closely mirrors what many around baseball expect Philadelphia to prioritize.
“The Phillies have been one of baseball’s best teams since Don Mattingly became interim manager on April 28, but they have several needs: bullpen, right-handed bat and No. 5 starter,” Todd Zolecki noted for MLB.com. “But they also have one of baseball’s weaker farm systems, so it will be fascinating to see how much they do in regards to both quality and quantity.”
That creates a familiar balancing act for Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. Philadelphia has championship aspirations and a veteran core built around Harper, but its thinner farm system could limit how aggressively it pursues multiple upgrades.
