The Philadelphia Phillies have watched a handful of former players find opportunities elsewhere after exits over the course of this season, but none have made an impact with their new teams as quickly as right-hander Bryse Wilson.
After spending a very brief stint on Philadelphia’s active roster before being designated for assignment, Wilson suddenly found himself as part of a Chicago Cubs relief corps searching for depth. Then, just days later, he rewarded that gamble with one of the biggest performances of his career.

Wilson’s standout debut with the Cubs arrived at an ideal time for the team, which entered his initial game relying on a taxed bullpen and looking for someone capable of eating multiple innings against one of the National League’s better offenses.
“In the middle of a bullpen day, the 28-year-old Wilson answered that call,” MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian wrote of Wilson’s debut with the Cubs last week. “Claimed off waivers earlier in the week and added to the roster on Saturday, the right-hander logged 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his debut appearance for a Chicago staff desperate for help. Wilson struck out four and issued no walks in his effort.”
His effort proved instrumental in helping Chicago navigate extra innings, giving manager Craig Counsell exactly the kind of length the club desperately needed.
“Everybody stood out,” Counsell said after the win against the rival Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, per Bastian. “But Bryse Wilson would be the guy we got an incredible effort from. Obviously, that’s a very good offense and he got 14 outs for us and didn’t give up a run, made some big pitches to some good hitters.”
For a pitcher who was searching for stability only days earlier, it represented an ideal first impression with his new organization.

Wilson’s path to Chicago included a brief return to the Phillies organization that ultimately didn’t last long.
“He began this year with the Phils on a minor league deal,” Darragh McDonald reported for MLB Trade Rumors. “He was released in early June and then re-signed to a new minor league deal, perhaps indicating there was some kind of opt-out in that deal. In the second deal, he triggered an upward mobility clause… The Phillies added him to their roster but bumped him off after one scoreless appearance of two innings.”
That transaction quickly became Chicago’s gain.
While Wilson’s long-term role with the Cubs remains to be determined, his debut immediately demonstrated why the club claimed him off waivers. And it suggested that a Phillies team that will need similar pitching depth might have mismanaged their chance to retain Wilson deeper into the season.
Whether that performance earns Wilson a permanent place in Chicago’s pitching plans remains to be seen, but his first appearance showed how quickly a change of scenery can reshape a player’s outlook — and how rapidly a castoff can become a hero for another contender.
