The Philadelphia Phillies enter the second half of the season firmly in the National League playoff picture, sitting in Wild Card position while continuing to chase the division-leading Atlanta Braves.
But with every game carrying increased postseason importance following a surprising turnaround in the standings, the club can’t afford prolonged slumps from everyday contributors.
And that reality has now placed some additional attention on center fielder Brandon Marsh, whose recent struggles at the plate have become one of the concerns for a Phillies lineup that has otherwise remained one of the National League’s strongest. After Marsh’s All-Star first half helped carry the Phillies, interim manager Don Mattingly has weighed in on Marsh’s sudden issues at the plate.
Philadelphia Phillies Manager Mattingly Sends Clear Message On Brandon Marsh
Speaking about Marsh’s recent offensive dip, Mattingly downplayed concerns and expressed confidence that the veteran outfielder will work through it.
“Marsh is fine,” the manager said, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Lochlan March.
“You’re always going to have spots,” Mattingly added. “I look at it, kind of see the quality of it. I can tell when guys are having good at-bats or bad at-bats or looking like they’re a little bit tired. But you’re basically looking at if they’re controlling the zone.”
Mattingly’s three-word response on Marsh was the clearest indication yet that he has no plans to alter the outfielder’s role despite the recent slump. And that enduring confidence is understandable, considering Marsh has already overcome similar adversity before.
“Marsh said earlier this season that going through the slump he had in April 2025 — when his batting average dropped as low as .095 to start the year before he turned things around — gives him the confidence that he can navigate another skid,” March noted.

The Phillies might feel like they have little choice but to remain optimistic about Marsh, given how important he has been to the team’s recent success.
“Marsh’s improvement this season has been a huge factor in the Phillies’ cutting their deficit in the NL East from 10.5 games on May 22 to two games at the All-Star break,” Jim Salisbury wrote for NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Since the start of May 2025, he’s hitting .302, fourth-best in the majors.”
Those numbers help explain why the Phillies remain committed to letting Marsh play through another rough stretch instead of making a dramatic lineup change.
With the postseason race tightening and Philadelphia still pursuing the Braves atop the division, maintaining stability could prove just as valuable as chasing short-term fixes. Marsh has already demonstrated an ability to rebound from prolonged struggles, and Mattingly’s public vote of confidence suggests the organization expects a return to the first-half form that made him a debut All-Star.
