The Philadelphia Phillies entered the trade deadline knowing that incremental moves were unlikely to be enough. After weeks of inconsistent play and growing pressure in the National League Wild Card race, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski faced increasing pressure to dramatically reshape the roster around a core still built to contend.

And the executive, known for a history of significant trades, delivered with a blockbuster move to fortify the batting order on Monday.

Just a few hours before the trade deadline was reached, news surfaced that the Phillies had acquired perennial batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants. The move instantly answered questions about how Dombrowski would upgrade the offense, but it also raised some questions about the team’s future defensive alignment.

“The Philadelphia Phillies are acquiring three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants in a move that has the second baseman joining his fifth team in five years,” ESPN reported. “The 29-year-old Arraez, who is slated to become a free agent after this season, returned to second base this season with the Giants, and his defense at the position is among the best in the league.”

Arraez has indicated that he wants to stay at the keystone this season amid a personal defensive renaissance. And that is expected to push a move for Phillies franchise slugger Bryce Harper.

“Bryce Harper brought his outfielder’s glove on the last road trip, saying he was ready to move to the outfield, if needed,” MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki noted after news of the trade surfaced. “He’s expected to move to the outfield to make room for Luis Arraez in the infield. Alec Bohm to first base, Bryson Stott to third base.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber was among the other beat reporters to indicate Harper will be changing positions to pave the way for Arraez on Monday.

The addition of Arraez was not the only significant move for the Phillies on Monday.

“The Phillies have agreed to acquire left-hander Brooks Raley in a trade with the Mets,” Darragh McDonald reported for MLB Trade Rumors. “Going the other way will be prospects Luke Gabrysh and John Spikerman.”

Monday morning delivered a flurry of updates for the Phillies, with several hours still remaining before the deadline. And aside from the acquisitions of a new infielder and new reliever, the move for Harper was among the most dramatic developments for fans of the team to keep an eye on.
